Detachable Towbar Security Plate |
|
I currently have a detachable towbar for my D4 as I'm an occasional tower. Since purchasing the car in April I've towed a trailer once and under it with my 2 bike carrier about 6 times.
However, I have a home move coming next year, as I'm planning to move from Surrey to Herefordshire. Owning 4 other project cars, plus 2 owners club cars, I am looking for a 3.5T car transporter trailer. Having read on hear that the detachable towbar can fail I have been looking into replacing with a fixed bar. However I have seen this plate on eBay which looks like it would address the issue of the bar coming out unexpectedly. I always remove the bar when not in use and would still do the same with this plate, but what I would really like to know is if anyone has used this plate or similar, or if the fixed bar offers significant advantages over the detachable one?

I use such a plate, it can be fitted and removed in minutes and gives the assurance that the tow ball will not come loose

The towbars only wear and become a problem if you leave them attached all the time according to LR

Is it the tow bar, or the receiving slot that wears, or even both?

Hi,
has yours had the recall done/checked
ISTR if it failed it was the rear cross member that was replaced
personal opinion but I would still be using the removable type for that sort of job if all in good order.
