United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE Auto Cairns BlueDiscovery 3

yesterday using the STP AC top up kit from Halfrauds got the AC ice cold again,

today moved handfree screen from dash, which was a pain to see and use, to a Brodit bracket

tomorrow, if parts arrive, new left hand steering wheel controls and wheel harness to be fitted, lets hope this sorts out the cruise not working. also the new switch pack has the heated wheel switch ready for when i find one..

well parts arrived today to get the cruise working, new LH steering wheel switch pack and lead.
the switch pack came with a new lead, so ordering a lead was a waste of money Censored
new switch pack was also the wrong colour, bright silver with chrome horn bar, where mine is a darker gret with matching horn bar, so had to swap over the insides to get a matching case.
so all fitted and working, yet the voice control doesn't work, thinking it might be something to do with the adaptor lead for the handsfree kit, will look into this maybe some other day.

so cruise control now fully functional Very Happy Very Happy

New NSF wheel bearing. Thwarted yesterday by a lack of suitable socket for the caliper but amazon sorted me out and I got the job finished this evening.
No longer sounds like an old SIII when driving along now. Thumbs Up

What did I do last week…….…….

After 7 years and 55,000 miles it was time to replace the Michelin Latitude tyres as the rear right was slightly out of round and all the tyres had just about a millimeter of life remaining.
After a bit of phoning around Costco were the preferred supplier for 4 new Michelin Pilot sport tyres…each one at just over £122.

So off I go to Costco to get the tyres removed and replaced. After 30 mins in the workshop I get a phone call….”Your wheel nuts are swollen and the 22mm socket doesn’t fit.”

So I take the car out of the workshop and go back home to see what sockets I have that will do the job. After rattling around in the garage for a bit I have a mix of AF and WW sockets which I have drifted onto the oversize nuts. So, I know I can get the nuts off. I should explain that there was no problem with the locking wheel nuts. So now to find replacement wheel nuts. A quick phone call to Aylmers confirmed that they had 16 wheel nuts (not all the nuts had swollen but I took the view that as they were all the same age then swelling was likely to be on the way)

I got to Aylmer’s in the lashing rain and bought 16 wheel nuts for around £80, and replaced each one, one at a time in the car park. The mechanic in Aylmer’s was kind enough to lend me a 23mm socket which allowed for easy removal of the nuts and I replaced and torqued the nuts with my 22mm socket and torque wrench.

So off back to Costco, where the tyres were replaced. Marvellous. Job done.

On my way back home, I stopped to refuel the car. 200 metres after leaving the filling station the battery no charge light illuminated on the dashboard. So, I go the 4 miles home with the warning illuminated.

At home I get out my meter and check the battery voltage….12.3 with the engine off and 12.4 with the engine running.

The following morning it’s a call to the AA. A nice helpful chap arrives the following morning who does all his checks and agrees with my diagnosis that that the alternator is not charging. (The previous evening, I researched the maintenance records to see when I last had the alternator replaced. That was in 2010 when the car was 4 years old.
So at least the failed alternator had lasted 9 years, which was twice as good as the original)
So, another phone call to Aylmers to ask if they could remove and replace my alternator. This they duly did which all in was around £500.

Worn out tyres I get…..I understand the wheelnut is a common issue, which appears to result from a rubbish design philosophy, but as for being on its third alternator after 110,000 miles…………….

All in Just shy of £1,100 spent on her last week.

Great support from Martin and the team at Aylmer Motor works in Potters Bar, and indeed Costco for being so patient.

Just put on some 18" SE rims that I got off the forum. Powder coated them black and now complete with BF Goodrich rubber.
