Didnt Lock Suspension - Compressor Fault

Hi All

Ive a 2011 Discovery and a while ago I changed the tyre without locking the suspension.

Now everytime I start it up the compessor sounds for around 1 minute, nothing major but I am selling so need to put it right.

Anyone know of this issue and what is needed to fix it?

Thanks In Advance

Dave

I’ve never locked the suspension to change a tyre sounds like your compressor may be on the way out unfortunately

Could be the air reservoir leaking especially if your suspension does not drop overnight.
Test it with some soapy water (look for bubbles)

Sorry how do you lock the suspension - never heard of this - you can lock at access height but that does not stop the suspension moving when jacking.

I have had my car for 10 years and had many flats and have never heard of locking the suspension - there is nothing in the handbook either.

Sounds like the compressor then.

Well when I jacked the car up to change the rear NS wheel, the car kept getting higher and wheel kept coming down, until the car was ridiculously high!

The AA said I should have locked the suspension to disable the lowering of the wheel??

Anyway, since then the compressor randomly vibrates when starting up and at other odd occasions, other than that it all works fine.

Cheers

Dave

The AA person doesn't know what what they're talking about. There is no facility to stop the wheels dropping.
You just need a big jack to get high enough to get the wheel off the ground.

I don't imagine that what you did changing the wheel had any effect on the compressor, or any other issues related to suspension.

As mentioned - absolute nonsense. When changing a wheel - you need to raise the car as high as you can - off road and if you are able even higher and then jack the height - as you found the wheel just stays where it is as you jack until the wheel travel is used up and only then the wheel lifts off the ground. Jacking it up first means less winding on the jack to get the wheel of the ground.

There is absolutely no way to lock the wheel so it raises with the body - owners need to learn the basics of how their cars work.

If in doubt read the handbook.

Hiya

Indeed, also never heard of locking suspension

Personally I’ve also put suspension into off road height prior to jacking, inc , pulling fuse F26 as an extra belt and braces so I at least know there’s no possibility of the compressor kicking in whilst jacked up

Bit Scary when u put the fuse back in as the suspension drops to the bump stops

Hi dave

As others have said it does sound like a possible leak / compressor

Also and plse don’t think I’m being rude but since jacking it up on the rear NS and u now get vibration from the compressor did u accidentally jack it up under the compressor and possibly damage the bracket

Fingers crossed will be a simple fix Thumbs Up

Now that is a very good point - I have done it and thankfully it only cracked the compressor mounting bracket but it still worked - I have heard of others doing the same and actually damaging the compressor itself.

Hi @garrycol

Hope this finds u well Thumbs Up

Many thks , Reason I wondered that as when I first bought my disco the compressor also rattled , indeed after I had a look found that someone had jacked it up as the bracket had been snapped completely off the chassis , the mountings were also non existent

also made a mistake as I didn’t realise at first that u can buy the bracket with and without the rubber vibration mountings, alas it took me months to sort the suspension out as it had been severely neglected

Phew, bet u was relieved it didn’t damage the compressor

See u can buy protection plates for the compressor

Yes was traumatic - went around a corner and DSC came on due to a deflating rear tyre. Parked up in the nearest town to change the tyre while my companions went and got lunch and left me behind.

Set the car to super extended height (I have LLAMS) and rushing because I wanted lunch I put the jack in the hole at the bottom of the compressor cover rather than in the chassis - crack, crack, crack - thankfully the mount only.

By the time I got the wheel changed my companions had finished lunch and wanted to head off so I missed out.
