Diff fluid

Hi all, going to be changing the front and rear diff oil soon. I know there a required quantity for each, but how precise does that have to be. Can you fill until you see oil coming out or it that going to damage anything?

If you fill until oil comes out of the filler hole, you will have overfilled it, which can cause damage to seals/ gaskets, resulting in leakage. Best to fill with the correct amount as near as possible.

Diffs are to be filled according to amount, NOT “fill to spill” Thumbs Up

It doesn’t have to be to the milliliter, though, it’s not a so exact science.

I am sorry but I have to disagree with the previous two posters.

Over 200,000km and 11 years I have filled until it runs out - same as tfr case - never had an issue or leaks. I have tested the amounts that go in and it is not really different to the specified amount - only a few ml in it.

The specified amounts might work on a new diff but the reality is that with an oil change, depending on what you do there is always oil left in the diff and as such means the actual amount of oil in the diff varies when you fill to the specified amount. In some cases you cannot get the specified amount of oil in.

As I indicated, I have had no issues filling to spill and there is only a few ml in the difference. I change my diff oils every 24,000km so have changed these oils 8 times with no issues.
