For the past 4 years I've been towing much heavier setups than the one I referred to earlier in this post (in 2007), closer to the 3 T mark. I only tow in Sports mode, and never use the cruise-control. Long hills, I will often override with command-shift. I change the gearbox oil at 80.000 km. There's been a lot of discussion on this over the past few years on the AULRO site, and this seems to keep everything running smoothly.

In LR's defence, there is an "arduous service" schedule which one should stick to if regularly towing such loads. IIRC, it recommends a gearbox oil change at around 80,000 km

Cheers,

Gordon

Our van is nearly 3 tonne when fully loaded and locking out top gear is a definite advantage reducing the load on both the motor and the gearbox.

Just so you are aware - Sport mode does not lock out top gear - the full range of gears are available it is just the change points are different - with respect to top gear the gearbox moves into it later after load has been stable for a little while.

I agree about your point about toeing in Sport mode - the change points tend to be more suited to the load.

The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

...... For starters I would have extended warranty as all our problems started AFTER the normal warranty period expired. Secondly I would change gearbox, and diff oils at 60000km intervals. (every dealer/mechanic and even the gearbox specialists suggested that this should be part of the service schedule when towing) .

.
Unfortunately even the extended warranty isn't what it was . They sell them , but don't stand by the agreement and argue the toss on just abut everything these days. It's become fraud . I'm with you on the tranny oil change frequency . The new pan/filter doesn't matter , but the oil change in a go .
Your long term problems are far from unusual .

Have any of you changed the oil yourself in the gearbox? IF so how do you do it and ensure the level is correct again. Where did you get the correct oil form?

Chris - you might find solace in this link courtesy of Disco3.co.uk member bbyer (a very thorough coverage, BTW)...

The oil required is ZF LifeGuard6 available from ZF directly but some are appearing on eBay as a result of the Ford use of the same box in certain Falcons.

Also check the following site for DIY info.
