Differential Lock

Hi all

I’m wondering what is the best range selection in my d3 for my jobs worst case ground quality scenario.

Let’s say I’m towing a 3.5 tonne trailer on a wet field. Or up a hill.

Am I right I’m thinking that I’d click the range knob once to the ice symbol program. Then press the DSC button. In low range.

Or is there some kind of differential lock?

Sorry if it’s a stupid question but it’s bugging me!

And tia as always

The Terrain Response control will coordinate the engine, transmission, transfer box and suspension to be optimum in the settings you choose.

GGS - Grass/Gravel/Snow is designed to have a softer accelerator pedal response so that the chances of losing traction when pulling away are reduced, you also tend to pull away in a higher gear than you would do in normal mode (2nd instead of 1st).

Mud/Ruts - introduces Hill Descent Control and also holds on to gears longer to provide more engine braking when descending hills.

Sand - this is quite aggressive as you need to gain momentum to go over sandy surfaces and gear changes can reduce that momentum.

Rock Crawl - this is very low speed control to allow you to walk over rocky surfaces and is only available in low range.

If you add in the fact you can go into low range without being in any special mode and you can also turn off DSC in any mode you've got lots of possibilities.

For pulling a heavy load without wheel spin, you need a high gear but first high might be too high so something like 2nd low might be better, DSC off will stop the engine power being reduced if wheel spin is detected and will also reduce momentum if you're moving if you don't turn it off.

So I'd recommend, 2nd Low in GGS mode with DSC off. However, there's always a chance it wont work.

It does other stuff though I think.

Eg muds and ruts puts the suspension up (won’t if trailer detected)
And locks the the transfer box sometimes. Look at the padlock on the 4x4 screen if you have that.

The padlock is the centre differential and will lock in varying degrees depending on the amount of spin detected in each axle. It can only be controlled by the electronics, you can't lock it yourself.

Gheez it gets me that people have these vehicles and know nothing about how they work. Start by reading the manual and if you do not have one get one

In a worst case scenario (when all else fails) - select Rock Crawl - you will get to low range, go to offroad height, the centre lock fully locks and you have what is essentially an old style 4wd. Never ever use DSC off road as it will limit power - it will come back on when you make TR changes so make sure you switch it back off.

If you can get a copy of the GOE book on the offroad operation of these vehicles it will tell you all you need to know.

DSC is never really off ...it will kick back in regardless if it detects major threshold trauma.
