I think it would be easier to balance a 2p coin on the end of a pencil tip whilst balancing on one leg on the edge of a cliff
I don’t think it is very difficult or troublesome on the V8, 1. remove dipstick, 2. Wipe it, 3. Reinsert, 4. Remove, 5. Note level, 6. Reinsert. As long as it is in between max and min I’m letting it be alone. I assumed it it similar on D3 TDV6...
Compared with trusting the D4 TDV6 electronic measurement the good ol’ mk1 eyeball is easy.
TDV6 is a length of cable with blobs on it to mark min/max and its very difficult to see the oil on itPete

It's not that easy on the diesel. If you can easily see the oil on the dip stick it means its black and should have been changed some time ago. If you can't see it it's either just been changed for nice fresh clean oil or you haven't got any!! Hope that helps

Oil in these engines (diesel ones) turns black after a handful of miles. Will be a very expensive time changing it every time it's black.

Are these marks year specific ??. As they are different to the ones in my owners manual.

Batfink, it sure is difficult to see if you have just changed the oil but as other posters have commented it goes black pretty soon after so change by (kilometres or) miles rather than colour.
The photo below shows one dipstick with oil in the hollows (by holding it horizontally) and that makes it a bit easier for me when I am checking the level. HTH

Not only is it hard to see but is hard to push the thing back in. Why is it so far back?

Not worried about the colour of the oil. I know unless your changing the oil every 10 minutes it will never be the same colour as when it goes in just more the stupid design of the markers on the stick.
Plus have found a good way of filling the oil without spillage. Cut about 4 inches off the top of a coke type plastic bottle and it fits in the hole and gives a larger area to aim at. Also use this indoors for fats and liquids from cooking.2006 TdV6 HSE.
