Disco 3 or 4
Sure it’s been asked before but...is there much actual difference in the two? Does the four drive better? Much more power or economy?
I’m assuming running costs will be pretty much the same?
Does the four drive differently between the six or eight speed auto, box? Suspension identical on both cars?
My old D 3 is high on miles and a 2006 so ageing now. I was just wondering if the four will be a significant advance on the three?
Thanks, John.Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007

The engines have more power.
They aren't any more reliable though.
I don't think I would get rid of your old one

Go for the 4. My D3 was a dog for reliability and costs but it did lead a bit of a hard life, my D4 didn’t put a foot wrong in the 2 years I owned it. I preferred the interior of the D3, seats & audio in the base(ish) S were way better than the HSE D4, but loved the fact that the D4 only cost me servicing and brakes.

I found there to be a BIG difference between comfort of the D4 XS and HSE. Well worth the extra money if you can stretch to HSE. I really like the D3 interior (it's what I have at the moment) and the seats are better than the D4 XS but not as good as the D4 HSE in my view.
I miss the gadgets on the D4 like reversing camera and front parking sensors. I hope that 2016 D4s here will stop going up and start behaving again soon so I can get one!PAGODA

Reversing camera in the D3 would have helped me not back into my old Jazz. Twice.
No it wouldn't … the screen would have been hidden behind a mound of McDonalds boxes !

They’d have been filling the passenger side footwell. They never got high enough to escape there.

Pete K, my old one is running like a sewing machine at the moment. It’s on 196,000 miles and still looks ok. Stereo has just decided to pack up again though and that’s getting on my wife’s wick. Second time it’s done it.i figure at 14 years old it’s not going to get better in the electrics department.
I spent three grand on it earlier this year.
It had in its past a proper remap. Running 230 bhp and is much more powerful and torquey than my wife’s old D3. Also more frugal.
The D4 looks to be a much more modern interior dash wise.
So far both D3 S we have owned have been HSE spec. I would be loathed to replace it with anything of lower spec. Her Volvo XC 70is the Lux model, we do a lot of miles and comfort is important.
The road tax is a disappointment on the D4. I thought emissions may have lowered that? Is it only on the much later models which use ad blue it comes down?
I am an Alfa fan and like the look of the Stelvio which is super quick, handles like a dream and is frugal along with low road fund tax. It’s not even close to the size of the Discovery though.
I am thinking once this Covid job protection finishes there are going to be a few cheap used cars on the market. After Christmas may be a better time to look?Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007

Mrs G_Cams D4 vas very nice.. but the engine reliabiliy was a real concern.. at least with a D3 they are worth as much in bits as a full runner these days.
the D4 was a bit smoother than my D3 but it was under half the miles on it... I liked the D4 interior but disliked the little things like the dipstick (or lack of) on the D4. my D3 was mapped and was as quick as the D4...
Basically I liked them both for slightly different reasons. The D4 was a newer car so was a little more refined but the D3 felt, somehow, more rugged?
I guess you pays your money...
I do agree that there are probably going to be a lot of expensive to run cars finding their way onto the market soon... I know a few people who are very concerned about going back to work and a few are being told working from home is going to be the new permanent way of working. So again more car being sold... Just look a last months new car sales! Ouch!1 TR6 Rusting away quietly
1 FARR UTV SOLD
1 International Harvester SOLD
7 x D3 all SOLD
2 x D4 both SOLD
1 x Mrs D4 'Panther' SOLD
1 x Outlander van SOLD
1 continual stream of car parts and me living in the garage...
Having been knocking around in a D4 now for 3 months my thoughts are they are both very similar yet very different cars. If I could choose again I'd probably pick up a well maintained D3 over a newer D4 & stick several grand back in the bank.
Why? It's the little things
1. D3 more comfortable seats (HSE v Landmark)
2. D3 better ride (19" v 20" rims?)
3. D3 lazy entry (D4 doesn't have this)
4. I like a stick to shift rather than the pop up dial on the D4
5. I preferred the TRC set up on the D3, the dial & flipper controls seemed more purposeful than the buttons on the D4
6. The adaptive xenon lights better on the D3 than the D4 thingies
D4 comments
1. Quicker engine that the std 2.7
2. Global close on the windows
3. SWMBO likes the heated steering wheel (it was the deal breaker)
4. I don't like the eco start stop.
5. Looks more modern inside & out but it doesn't take much to refresh to look of a D3
6. No Passenger cup holder like the D3
7. Cups fit the centre console in the D4 unlike the D3
8. Analogue clock in the D4
Mainly small points but it all added up to the experience.

you can upgrade your D3 if you wish with:
D4 Nav & reverse cam
heated steering wheel
D4 bluetooth
and even remap the engine
should these be important to you

The cost of retro fitting those D4 options must run at four figures though? The current value of a high road tax D3 barely exceeds what it will break for in parts so I’m a little loathed to spend big money on upgrading comfort options and sat nag isn’t a big deal for us. I drove trucks for many years and I can navigate my way around pretty well plus there’s always google maps.
It’s around 16-20 grand for a 2014 ad blue drinking D4 with the lower road fund licence.
I just wondered if the extra 10-14 grand Over the value of our D3 was worth the cost to replace our 2006 D3 HSE. It’s still a comfy place to do four hundred miles in a weekend and we still require 4 wd or AWD As we need the ability to cover Somerset back roads in any weather to get home on a Sunday evening for work.Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007

You don't have to do all of them!
Just putting it out there for thought, if any one interested you
