Disco 3 Christmas Tree Dash

Hi Guys,

I have an issue with my D3, it started back when the battery light started coming on, the battery passed all tests so I had the alternator changed, then 10 days later it started up all over again. At this point I felt it must be the battery as it was old anyway and now the indicator was displaying 'replace', which I did.

However a couple of days later, today, while driving home I got every warning bing and bong under the sun, suspension, brakes, airbags, park brake, land rover spider AWOL etc etc. The full D3 christmas tree. It then cut out on the side of the road just as I managed to pull into a village. If it was my defender I'm sure I'd have it fixed by now, however I loath the thought of working on the D3, everything has nasty plastic everywhere and its just no fun. My instinct is shouting wiring issue, actually it was the feeling I had from the start due to the intermittent way it started, but I would think that as I spend my life building wiring harnesses anyway.

Does anyone have any personal experience of this fault? I'm having it picked up and it would be great if I could point the guy in the right direction. I saw there was a similar thread on here but it had different circumstances.

Thanks

Thanks for the replys, I didn't personally replace it. AFAIK it was about £140 and they had to send that old unit back as part of the deal. However that sounds to you. Either way its a good garage that use good parts, just not a LR specialist.

I have been making a list from the other thread, brake switch is item number 2 Wink

I would have thought if the alternator was still the issue I would have seen the battery light in the 10 or so days when it was working. However from reading around it does seem like the system is prone to cascade failures.

Don't go down the road of replacing parts for the sake of trial and error, get the codes read and at least it may show up something cheap is the problem.

I will be getting them to do that now thanks. Before it seemed much more straight forward as it was only battery light and the battery seemed in good health, therefore low voltage from alternator...
Then when the battery indicator dropped to replace, I wasn't that surprised either as it was old and hadn't been getting properly charged.

I guess the question in my head is whether a significant drop in voltage would cause this cascade failure of systems that I experienced before it simply died, without anything else actually being at fault. I think if sensors are receiving a lower voltage then they will report incorrectly too.

But like I said, I'm prone toward thinking its a wiring issue. I've got ride height sensors, brake light sensors, wiring, and alternator on my list right now.

When my dash lit up it was an abs speed sensor, but 2 minutes with the code reader showed this up

Heres what I had on the screen that pointed to the faulty sensor

Hi localhost,

Having the codes read should give you the direction you need. However, in the absence of fault codes I can only offer one other possibility to that which has already been suggested, and that is the live feed to the starter. It is not unknown for this cable to fray on the powertrain, and cause intermittent or major electrical failure. Welcome to the forum!
