Disco 3 cruise control advice please
Hi all,
I have a V8 and the cruise control no longer functions at all. It has been intermittent for a while but now no longer works at all. My question is, do I start by ordering a new clock aping at several hundred dollars, or is there a cheaper place to start?
Very grateful for any advice. PAGODA

Remove the steering wheel airbag and carefully examine the little loom with the white terminal block.
The cables are a known problem and break right at the crimps. Be aware, the coloured insulation often remains intact so cables may visually look ok but careful examination will find the problem.
In this pic you can see Ive extended the white and brown cables after suffering the very same cruise control problems you're currently having.

On the D2 the brake light switch has 2 functions, 1 to apply the brake lights and 2 to switch off the cruise as you press the brake pedal, might be the D3 is the same?
Certainly a cheap place to start

Best way to check the cables is with a bulb meter not a MMeter, as this puts a load on the cable, they are like screwdriver with a bulb in the handle and a cable that clamps onto a battery, the prob end (-neg) is touched onto one end of the cable and the other end of the cable touched onto the +pos of the battery, if good the bulb lights or just use a 12v bulb in an holder It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

If I remember correctly, the brown wire ( lengthened with a red section in the pic above ) was the cruise control master and on my car it was broken right at the crimp on the white block.
The white was ( if I recall correctly ) a later problem with the same issue but this time it effected the steering wheel illumination of the buttons.
Good luck. Mods:

Quick question - if it breaks at the crimp/block, how or what tool do you need to re-insert/crimp a new piece into the block?

They are the same size as those wires and connectors used inside old PC's so suggest you pull an old computer apart and splice a few in.
You can buy the crimp ends too but no idea what they are called and you'll need to buy the crimp tool too.
Suspect somebody will know FBH uses the same size and cables are available for those from the forum shop.Mods:

I’ve got loads of old pc’s will give that a go.
Guess that means I’ll need a tool/key to remove the crimp from the pc connector.
Cheers

Quick update and thank you to Narpy - pulled the airbag out and looked at the cables; couldn't see any breaks. However, I did pull all the plugs out and re-seat and now cruise works, so clearly something wrong with the wiring. I imagine it's a temp solution but for now it works. So thanks.PAGODA
