Maybe not, but apart from the extra sea crossing, it cant be too much different.
We drove via Hull-Zebrugge overnight ferry last year, then 9 hours drive down to Les Carroz. It was far easier having the car, not only can you take all your own gear, but you can explore the ski area better, and find some more remote car parks, ski lifts etc.
I was working in Ireland in November, and used the Liverpool-Belfast overnight ferry. I suppose for you, it would mean a reasonably easy drive from liverpool to either Hull or Dover or Folkestone, and possibly an overnight somewhere. I suppose you could slog it all the way in one hit, but then you would need a day to get over it.

Last year we went from Dover to Calais on the Ferry and then drove for 10 hours until we got to Altenstadt at 1pm where we stopped over. Carried on from there the next day for another 3 hours until we got to Lech in Austria.
Did the return leg in one go, left Lech at 6am and got home at 1am the next morning. Very hard journey.
This year we are taking the chunnel and driving all the way in one go (with the odd nap stop included and then on the way home we are stopping overnight half way between Lech and Calais to break the journey up.
While in Lech we hire a self catering apartment that allows dogs, which we share with the missus' parents. we all take it in turns skiing or dog walking and it suits us fine. We drive purely because it means we can take as much crap as we want (and the dogs) and as we are self catering it is handy to have the cars so we can go shopping as we like.

Recently returned from a similar trip. 2k miles give or take.
Vehicle, tyres and journey were brilliant. French diesel prices are similar to UK. There is a truckstop on the motorway near the A16/A26 interchange (one junction nearer the ferryport) that was 10 cents a litre cheaper than the nearest Aire.
There's a minor trek around the industrial estate to get out, but you're straight back on the autoroute and one your way down to Lyon with a full tank - it means you can avoid refuelling in the really expensive Champagne region Club missing my D3
