Hi guys, new here, and off the bat have a question or two for you!
(Hoping to find answers)
I recently took my Discovery in for a service at a Land Rover Garage(Rockar)
And had just over £4,000 worth of work done, which I didn’t mind having done(as it’s better to have the history than none at all)
1. New alternator and belt
2. New battery
3. Front suspension arms(I think)
4. Parking break
5. Quite a few other things, but can’t find the paper with the list of work done!!
Prior to the car going into the garage, I broke down and lost all power, lights, etc.
Kept giving all kinds of error messages on dash, hence why it went in to the garage.
Anyway, I get the car back after a week of it being in, the driver who brought it back delivered fine no problems, but I asked about a weird burning smell coming from the engine/front wheel arch, to which he replied “I don’t know I am just a driver”
So, I took the car for a drive(supermarket and back, less than 10minutes)
And I get a warning message “parking break fault”
EDIT: They sorted out the “fault” - my guess is just used diagnostics to wipe the message, but all seems fine.
So I ring them up, explain the problem, they agree to look at it fo free.
Long story short, took it there, a day later I receive a phone call from them asking for another £600 to fix the problem!!!
Anyway..
My questions are:
1. The burning smell coming from wheel arch(Drivers side) and engine bay, what is it? I was told it was the new alternator, and the burning smell would go away after X amount of miles..
2. Has anyone else had problems with a Land Rover Garage before, if so, how would I go about complaining and hopefully getting my Discovery fixed properly by them without spending another penny?
3. The car also now gets hot quickly, whereas before it went in it didn’t. Could they have possibly broken something, to make me spend more money, or is this just me being too angry at them?
Any help would be appreciated..
Thanks.

Hi Chrizla, Sounds like the problem is still with the alternator. I have had this same problem with the smell from the front wheelarch driver side. Just smells like burning clutch, but it was the alternator.
Changed it for a genuine replacement Denso now all ok.
Might be worth checking to see if it has actually been changed and was it a genuine original part ie Denso.
Stopped going to the LR stealers , always got more problems whenever it came out.
Plenty of advice on this forum as well as support from AF and DM.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes it is a brand new alternator from what I can see, as well as the belt.
Would I get the burning smell because it’s brand new? - which is what I was told..

Well, I looked at alternator this evening and it seems brand new.
I am hoping all goes well now they’ve looked at it, and no more problems come along.
As for the burning smell, it’s still there.
If it’s there in a weeks time I will be going back and complaining.
The whole reason it went into their garage was to have the problems fixed.
And since they’ve done the work, I’ve smelt the burning.
I’m just hoping it’s nothing too serious.
Is there anything else I can check which may be causing the burning smell?

I notice the RAC do not salute anymore when they pass you. Standards have fallen
