Disco 3 Timing Belt Disaster - What are My Options?

Terrible news yesterday that the timing belt went on my 2.7 HSE Disco 3. My wife had it when it happened and was driving at low speed but no clue on extent of the damage but sounds like the typical one.. They are dropping it back at my home today.

The car is a 56 plate but its a 1 owner (me) car, has only done 82k and is mint for a 15 year old car and serviced every year. It only sees a couple thousand miles a year. I was going to just keep it until it stopped running as its super handy for bad weather and when u need all that space. I guess that came quicker than i thought!!

Having said this, I know it can be mighty expensive or even an engine swap to sort it so may not make any sense financially to fix a car this old even though its in great nick otherwise.

Welcome any advice from the community on what my options could be for repair, reconditioning or likely price if I sell as a project car for someone. I'm in Newcastle by the way.

Thanks.....

Seems it's done exactly what you wanted, you kept it for 15 years until it stopped running!

I know that's not helpful.

Engine swap with a Jaguar S Type 2.7 seems to be the cheapest fix. If it is your timing belt gone, there wont be much salvageable from your engine.

Had you ever had the oil pump changed in it's life?

Hi

So sorry to hear that , out of curiosity when did u last get ur timing belts and the oil pump changed plse

Personally would remove the front timing belt cover to see what’s gone and then go from there , but alas the engine is normally trashed

Many replace the engine using a S type jag

Hi

Funny enough was also wondering that ref the oil pump, see it’s a 2007 so maybe the tensioner has broken off the weaker designed oil pump casing

Assume though the OP had the belts changed

Thanks. Oil pump and belts were done when 7 years though i did not do it again at 14 as thought with the low mileage would get away with it.

What would i be looking at £££ to swap with a Jag engine? Any idea?

Depends on if you do it yourself or pay someone to do it!

Sounds a decent car and may be worth investigating a new crated engine if you can get one. From your original post it seems like you were treating it as a keeper, and it’s such low mileage to have value in that respect.

Personally I would think if you don't rely on the car, and only drive locally you could consider a cheap fix, by only replacing what is absolutly necessary. This plan could of course fail.

or you consider is a cherished car and spend £3-4K to fix it.

I guess you need to know what is wrong with it first. Has the pump really failed ?
Is there a crack or hole in the front cambelt cover, on drivers side ?

My local specialist is quoting 4k for an engine swap with a decent quality replacement. Given the age of the car im leaning towards selling it as a non runner. If anyone has the ability to replace/fix the engine a decent cost its otherwise a very good cars so may be worth the effort.

On here? Good as any place to sell. Plenty of interested parties.

With regards to your advice that they could fit a reconditioned engine. I would not go down that road as there are plenty of horror stories about these so called recons. When I said ‘crated’ engine I mean’t a genuine Land Rover engine. It might not be possible to get one nowadays.

I think we’ll all look back one day and cry at how quickly we sell these cars as non runners.

No other new vehicle has beaten these for versatility.

Another option, if you’ve got the time and a bit of space, is to strip her and sell her off bit by bit. You’ll get a lot more for her collectively, there’s always demand for parts. You don’t need any skills, I stripped mine a couple of thousand miles from home in a garage’s parking lot in Sortland, Norway, with just a leatherman and socket set. As you’re at home you’d be able to get the maximum off the bone, I was limited by time, fatigue and the volume available to recover the parts plus all my camping gear. I thought it would be very difficult as I’d had a very difficult time leading up to it (close bereavement) and a stressful time when she drove her last, but I actually found the whole process very therapeutic, almost enjoyable. It does need a bit of organisation to keep on top of “orders”, what parts are what and shipping but you set your own pace and take your time.

Worth a though. Thumbs Up

Sad to say as a non runner it is not going to have much value at all as one piece, may be worth breaking it kind of mad but that way you get to see it from birth to death?

I would think what can you buy to replace it with that wont cost serious money? add in the uncertainty of what is going to happen with diesels in the future, and all of a sudden 4k does not look to bad.

If you have the time and space you could strip the motor down to see what broke, mine went last august and i was able to fix it for less than 100 quid not including the new pump and belt kit.
