Disco 3 V8 4.4 coolant leak

hello guys. about a week ago I smelled some coolant, and I thought it was nothing and guessed it happened because it was hot weather. A little drop in the coolant as well. I refilled it.
Today I went for a ride and same thing happened. I opened the hood, saw a little drop on the coolant again. I popped out the plastic cover and this is what I found out. Can anyone advise on what this might be and if I can fixed it myself ?

here is the link

my car is left hand drive, and this is from the drivers side located.

thx in advance[/img]

where is that area exactly?

Jean-Paul,

Have to confess that the pictures give me no idea where to check on my own V8. Could you describe a bit where the area is? Any surrounding parts (like close to...).
Have noticed a tiny smell lately in the garage as well but noticed no loss. As I had a S-Type Jaguar V8 before the Disco (Jaguar clear plastic expansion tank is known to develop invisible cracks) I got a bit alarmed.

Kind Regards

Nikolaus

Hi there, Jean Paul.
From the photographs it is very difficult to see where is it leaking from
I had a leak, too, and I noticed the smell of coolant when warming up, not in cold or hot.

My crankshaft pulley was covered in dry coolant and had spread it over the place.
Coolant consumption was approx 1/2 litre for every 1000 kms, but on long journeys (500-1000 kms) it only leaked 100 cc.

Ithought it was the water pump but I was wrong

After very close examination by my local dealer, a faulty thermostat housing was diagnosed. The housing is made of cheapo plastic and had deformed, so a new one complete thermostat housing together with thermostat was ordered and fitted one year ago. No more leaks since.

Mine's a 7A model year. If yours is the same it could well be the case
Hope that helps

Best regards and good luck

I need to avoid the dealer. I will try to post some more pictures. I was not a able to locate the leak . i was only able to see where it goes and builds up. which is the place i have posted on hte pics.

also I thought it would be common problem as alwaya with all disco's and it would be a straight answer solution. like look at this or this and thats it ..

guess not Sad Sad
mine is a 2005 model

Coolant smell is a key indicator.

I had the same problem with the thermostat housing, a pin hole leak which, over time, leaked down the front of the block and left an evaporated puddle on the front skid plate (oil filter cover). I've got too many mies for it to be under warranty so I patched the leak with epoxy putty. When i change the drive belt I'll probably fit a new housing ($148 including thermostat and new sensor).

Take the front skid plate off and check to see if there's a pool of coolant there. Also shine a light up the front of the engine from underneath and check to see if there's a mess of coagulated coolant.

Judging by the fact that your photo shows coolant pooling on the top area of the engine I wold suspect perhaps the thermostat housing?

I have removed all the panels from underneat years ago so that more air get into the engine and so that i can easily inspct for leaks. I am not going to extreme 4x4 so I am not afraid of hitting somehting. when i am into real adventure I fit those back and then remove them again. So there were no leaks underneath the car or anywhere else besides on the block, (look pictures)

But for the time being... after close inspection I found out that it was part number 9L490 . the cap that is for bleeding has inside a black rubber insert. this one was damaged, hence leaking coolant. I was amazed that it all ended up on the block though and I was afraid for the worse(gasket etc) Thankfully it was only this part which costs 3pounds aproximately and easily replaceable.

thank you all so much for the input

Nice to see that your problem has been solved.
Glad that V8's are sooo reliable and give only minor niggles.

Cheers from Spain

Good to see it was a simple fix.

That reminds me, I had a catastrophic failure of this valve about a year ago, broke completely in two, coolant everywhere, at first sight it was very worrying but turned out to be a very simple fix.

I'd like to get a nice stainless steel part to replace this, I currently have a brass nipple where the valve used to be.
