Disco 3 Won't start, fuel flowing from supply and return

I've got a Disco 3 that won't start, it's had a recon engine, it cranks over all day but no smoke and no fuel is coming out of the injectors,

Things we've done;

had engine out again, checked timing, crank and cam sensors and changed High Pressure fuel pump,
Replaced fuel filter and checked electronic signal to injectors - all good. Also changed the pressure sensor on the fuel rail small middle fuel rail (2.7 TDv6).

The only fault codes are HPFP related - pressure irrattic, but bear in mind its had another used HPFP.

I get good flow from the Low pressure tank pump, but today noticed when both flow and return are disconnected fuel flows through both at the same rate, is that normal?

Have you tried doing a fuel lift pump procedure with your diag tool?.

Flack Thumbs Up

Hey flack haven't tried that yet, how's that done?

Plugged The diag machine and the fault was
1 "engine system shut down circuit open"
2 "break light switch"

So went ahead and Have changed the
1.high pressure pump
2.New Intank pump
3.New fuel rail pressure sensor
4.new brake light switch
5.checked all the nozzles fine

And now the engine system shut down fault gone.

I've geot a new fault now
1.fuel pressure regulator low fuel pressure (new fault)
2.brake light switch still comes up although fitted a new switch

with regards to my original post, it turned out to be failed injectors, put a set in and it fired right up, we had systemically tested everything from tank upwards though.

I would check for diesel leaks on high pressure side first,
It might be worth looking at the ignition switch, or around that area, Does the immobilizer light go out?

Anon,
1.no diesel leaks on high pressure at all, although the common rails seem empty as I tried to disconnect the fuel supply line on injector number 1 while cranking to see if I'll get any pressure leaking but nothing

2.What should I be looking for at the ignition switch

3.where is the immobilizer light!? Is it suppose to be going out!?

Hey Pete,

How long we roughly talking here till I get lucky starting the engine!?
Been cranking the engine till the battery died now gotta charge it overnight and keep going again tomorrow.
I have to be careful with the starter motor too otherwise it will burn.

Hey lads

So the engine fired up once for like 15 second with lots smoke at the back and a bit of misfire and the went off and won't start again after lots cranking.
The diag tool shows NO single fuel faults, only brake light switch fault keeps coming.

Help please!

Now the
P251D-00:PTO ENGINE SHUTDOWN CIRCUIT/OPEN
Just showed up

Similar problem

Hi
I am new to the forum as have just bought 2 disco 3's (both 2005 tdv6 hse autos)

one good one bad!

The bad one I bought with a knocking engine (low oil killed it)
Problem is now have fully rebuilt engine and ready for first start,
I have the iid tool and this shows no engine ecu faults but it will not start,
We have about 7 psi on the low pressure and good fuel flow on the return,
But hi pressure side only getting about 2000 kpa when cranking over

We opened pipe from top of hp pump and when cranking only get fuel for about 2-3 seconds then it stops flowing?
if you do 3 seconds cranking then quick off then crank again you get flow

it seems to me to be pointing to the hp pump in some way but it ran fine (except very noisy Smile before the rebuild.

Any advice help would be great Thumbs Up

Hi Ted

Try another hpfp to see of that's where the problem is,just go with the second hand one before spending loads, those hpfp seems to be the problem most of the time and to your case sounds like It.

Hi Timothy
Thanks for the advice.
I have 2 disco 3’s and checked the good one today by disconnecting the electronics to the
Injectors and cranked over got over 40000 Kpa just by cranking over showing on iidtool.
Confirms my suspicions.
I have ordered a pump hopefully fit it Wednesday or Thursday when it’s arrives Very Happy
Seems a good forum here.

Off topic but I am used to working on my defender 300td! Does not even need any electronics to run if you remove the plunger from the stop solenoid.

I once drove it for 3 consecutive days with no power as alternator died.
Bit concerned about my upcoming trip to Morocco later this year in the D3 Whistle
