DISCO 4 ENGINE FAILURES

I want to upgrade from D3 to D4 , I have had a couple of people tell me about engine failures due to a problem caused by main bearings fitted incorrectly at the factory that blocks oil flow to the top of the engine and that Landrover are fitting new engines even out of warranty.

Is this true and is there a particular age or vIn number range that should be avoided?

I am looking for 2010/2011 XS auto if anyone has one for sale.
Have 2008 SE , with 11 months warranty still on it (warranty direct) which included wear and tear , also MOT failure.
67,000 miles good condition full history.

There have been a relatively small number of D4 engine failures, compared to that of a D3

There are far fewer incidences in the D4 because the crankshaft installation method was changed so that shells could not rotate in the same way that they could have done with the D3.

SDV6 .....and oil

Hi .... just a reminder ..... never ever deviate from the original spec engine oil ..... these engines are ultra sensitive to oil grade. I had a long conversation with Opie oils uk .... they maintain the thin original oil 0-30 is critical to this engines proper function. The thin oil creates the correct oil wedge in the bearing - and ensures a good flow .... if you change to say a 0-40 the wedge shape is different and the flow rate is less .....creating more heat. These engines run with pretty tight tolerances ..... so be warned .... change oil very frequently 7.5k and keep to the right grade.....

And keep yer fingers crossed. Increased frequency of oil changes doesn't seem to make any difference, when she's gonna go she's gonna go. Thumbs Up

I thought the correct oil was a 5W-30 ?

And yet, PSA (who build the engine) recommend 5W30 C2

Confused

Just a question on engine failures?

My old (failed at 57,600) engine used to consume a bit of oil - not a lot, but certainly enough that I would keep an eye on it and often a part bottle of oil was kept in the car for the periodic splash / top up.

My 'new' engine has 30k on it and (so far, touch wood...) has been OK on oil consumption, not needing a top up between services.

This ties in with my experience with the earlier D4 and (albeit different engine) both FL2's, neither of which required oil - I'd actually thought that LR's had given up oil loss until the old engine experience...

So... just wondered if there could be any correlation between oil use / loss and the potential for failure?

Oil consumption doesn’t seem to be the reliable guide that it once was.

My first D4 didn’t drink a drop.

My second one used a fair amount and then apparently stopped using any. It turned out that it was using oil, but it was simply being topped up with diesel from the DPF regeneration cycle Sad

I get worried if the oil level doesn’t drop now!

Two glorious D4’s, but I have now defected to the Footballer / Drug Barron camp - with a L405 FFRR Wink
