Disco 4 rear brake pad replacement - anything to be aware of
My local main dealer have been telling me for about six months that my rear pads have 2mm of material left, they're still going strong but I feel they may need replacement soon.
Stratstone have quoted around £400 for the job, but as I've always replaced my own brake components on past cars, I thought I'd save about £375 and do the job myself...
On my old Passat there was a procedure for retracting the electronic parking brake shoes, and my Saab needed a 7mm Allen key, which isn't common.
So, before I begin the spanner-fest, is there anything go should know about rear brake pad replacement on a 4? Any "gotcha's" or special tooling or procedural requirements?

Have a read of Bodsy's Brake Bible
Nothing unusual needed, caliper mounted on slider pins that some spanner can be a bit thick to hold the nut while undoing the bolt(that sentence will be much clearer when you do it). You will then need to push the piston back in, I use a proper tool for this but a big pair of grips will the do the same. Make sure your brake reservoir isn't full up when you push the piston back in or you will end up with fluid coming out.
7mm allen keys aren't common in key sets but they are very common on car brakes,I've had Ford,Vauxhall,Volvo that used 7mmIID PRO

Follow the brake bible but IIRC there is a model year split on the correct rear pads for a D4.
Mine is a 2010 MY so, for once, I shouldn't be on the changeover year for anything! It's been an issue in the past with various mercs and vw's

for just pad replacement, it just spanner work - no allen keys needed.
Takes longer to jack up the car and remove the wheels than it does changing the pads.

You could be right Ian but early D4 rear callipers are aluminium and with the later ones cast iron. There is a chassis number split that defines the type fitted and the pads to match. If I stumble on the VIN break I'll drop you a note for the Brake Bible.
