Disco 4 starting problems

Hi, new on here and wondering if anyone has experienced an issue I'm having just now.

Basically the car won't start, symptoms of a flat battery, it does click, or series of clicks when press/hold the start button, all other warning lights go out except the battery/charge. Thought it had just been to many short journeys in the snow with lots of electrical things on.

However, can't jump start (from either a 4.2 TD Land Cruiser or boost pack). Removed battery and charged it on bench charger, still wouldn't start, replaced battery - you get the drill. If it was a manual I'd be inclined to put it in gear and rock it a bit in case the starter pinion was jammed or something.

Had a local mechanic look at it today, he says definitely not the battery, possibly the starter, but he needs to get it on a ramp and take skid plates and stuff off. Trouble is its an auto, in park, so can''t move it without engine power.

Are starter's prone to failure? Any thoughts?

ISTR there is a "trigger" under the cover behind the EPB switch that releases it from P. I had to use it last year when my selector cable fell to bits. I'll try and find the how-to vid, once I get the pizza in the oven. Thumbs Up

Here ya go:

On the right side of the shifter, there is a small rubber tray that could easily be removed with your fingers. By removing that rubber tray, you will access a small hole where you can put your finger up through the back of the shifter, about an inch behind the ``D.`` Press the plastic tab, that has a springy feel. While pressing that tab upwards, you can then move your shifter to the neutral position. Then release the tab & you will be able to shift it to the drive position.

Thumbs Up

PS Having watched that, not sure if that I'd to take the box out of P or just move the lever. Confused

The D4 might have the type rotary knob , if so here’s a link to get the car into neutral.

A clicking when trying to start suggests a poor connection, put one jump lead from the battery earth to the engine block and try again, if that fails check the power cable back from the starter as it is known to rub and short blowing the main fuse near the battery if access is possible.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

No just a plain boring frozen pizza as SWMBO is away, and still in the oven. Trying to resist the lure of a cheeky little Zin from the recent deliveries, mainly coz it won't be just one glass, it's just too nice to leave any to go off. Whistle

Thanks for the tips, eventually traced to a dodgy earth connection from the battery to chassis...
