There is no doubt it is the air gun that does the damage, so any work involving the wheels coming off, I ask that they don't use one, or if they do and the result is damage, they understand I will be insisting on some new nuts.
I recently bought some new ones and found some of the caps were loose on the nut, if they were a tight fit the issue of deformation would be partially resolved.
So I removed the covers and used a strong mastik adhesive in the caps before putting them back on.
The result is less chance of the damage happening in the future and the clicking noise of loose nut covers eliminated.

I bought a set off eBay recently. Hard chromed without caps. States specifically for D4 but on inspection they were completely unfit and unsafe. They looked really good but the shoulder was too far down. Instead of 19mm of thread insert there was only 11mm. That left a lot of unused thread.
Fortunately the seller has the best guarantee I’ve seen. 60 days return even if they’ve been used and free return postage. Got my money back no problems but still waiting for news on correct nuts becoming available.

Maybe I'm just lucky with my wheel nuts. I use my Makita 18V gun on them every time and have not had any problems. Re locking wheel nuts, what are generally well-recommended ones? 2010MY Disco 4 HSE in Ipanema Sand over Almond.
It's got THE rear diff.
