Disco3 SE TDV6 should it stay or should it go?

Hi all,

This is my first post so hello to you all.

I have owned my beautiful Disco3 2007 TDV6 SE in black with black leather for almost three years. I love it and its the best car I have ever owned, BUT with Landrovers history for poor reliability and my current financial state I am thinking it may have to go. I had to let the warranty expire in October so we are now running it without one....and scared stiff something is going to go wrong!!

It drives beautifully but sometimes, if it has been sat for long periods, one of the brakes seems to bind. The suspension goes down of its own accord when stopped as well....I am sure its not supposed to do this!!!

What do you guys think, should it stay or should it go??? We had an old Freelander (2001) which we spent £4000 trying to sort out the running gear and in the end we part ex'd it for the Discovery (talk about going from rags to riches!). I just can't afford to keep the Disco if its going to start going wrong and costing a fortune to sort out.

Why oh why can't Landrover build reliable as well as beautiful cars?? (hope thats not too controversial a statement!).

Advice much appreciated!!

England 2007 Discovery 3 TDV6 XS Manual Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

I've got a 57 plate XS that has been fault free !

Well until recently, it threw up a warning light a couple of times the other week but it's been fine since Whistle

I'll be honest with you I don't bother with warrantys, if I did I would rather buy a new car every 3 years that way you get manufacturer warranty, I can't cope with arguing the toss about what is and is not covered ?
Lifes too short, if it fails then I will either get it put right or flog it ! There's not much point in putting it right and then flogging it as some one else will benefit.
I'm in the same position wondering if I should get rid ?
But what I get will be more expensive, have worse fuel consumption and be nowhere near as comfortouble or as user friendly !

It's a difficult one but whatever you choose it will be the right decision ?

im obviously biased but keep it if you can but bear in mind your getting to that age on it now were the odd bits do seem to start to go wrong and being a landrover they can be a bit costly.
its a good age to get a fairly strong return If your up against it financially selling may be the way forward you can always come back if things improve

There only you who can answer that, it's your decision, big car big bills.
I have had the same delemma, I bought a Freelander 2 59 HSE for HWMBO to try, she wouln't use it kept pinching the D3, every time we went out in it all I got was ear ache,"it's not as good as D3, D3 got so and so this hasn't" and so, and so on. Thought it was a good idea at the time, cheaper to run, so I sold it for a new Evoque, that lasted two days before sold it, HWMBO didn't like it and niether did I, not my style at all, so we have decided to keep the D3, the D4 does not seem any different to the D3 to justify the cost.

You all have very valid points!

I must admit, we went out in it today (its not used very often as its like our cherished sunday best car) and it was soooooooo lovely, we could see over the hedges, my bum was lovely and warm with the heated seats......I really don't want to sell it.

One of the things I have been thinking about is using a local Landrover specialist to service/maintain it rather than paying main dealer costs. But I am worried that if I do have to sell it then that would detract from the cars appeal. Everyone down here seems to use the specialist I am thinking about (their loco is on every wheel cover you see!) and it would definately be cheaper.

I think I do have a 'good one'. It has been great so far, just a issue with brakes that involved two warranty trips to the garage but other than that its fine at the moment.

We also considered a Freelander2 rather than the Disco3 but made the big mistake of test driving the Disco first....after that the Freelander was seriously underwhelming. Probably a trick the Dealership does all the time!

I seem to have lots of bad luck with cars (we have 4 in the household) and I always seem to buy duds. I just know that with my luck in a few months time I could be landed with a massive bill. Do I risk it or not......oh its so hard to decide Confused

I think you have already made your mind up. Mine is 3 years older than yours and I have decided to keep mine, it has just made its last visit to the main dealer with a bill for £1500, but this covered the 7 year service(the big one) and front suspension repairs, this is the only big cost I have had in the last 3years - the difference in our cars ages. So hopefully you can expect the same in the next 3 years, not a lot for the enjoyment and satisfaction it gives. The next option is a new one, cost £40k+ that is only going to lose £20k in the next 3 years. I consider my car to be as good now if not better than when I bought it so why change. We would all like a new car every year but unless it can be written off against tax it's not possible.

As someone pointed out "better the devil you know". You could end up with a pile of poo that will cost you more.

I had my D3 serviced by TFC for 2 years. When I took it in to P/Ex I expected the Trade In to be slighly down but was told that a good Indy is not a distraction on the price.

Keep it - nothing out there touches them Thumbs Up

You all have made good points for keeping it. Even the AA man (called out the other day for my VW Passat which broke down because of a rubbish garage doing a rubbish job which caused the failure) said that all cars have their faults. I am very tempted to get the local specialist to service/mot it this time (all due at end of march along with tax and insurance!!!! EEEKKKKK!!!!!).

We can't afford a new Disco...maybe if we had won the £45 million Very Happy And it looks like we may have a move to the Glasgow area in the near future, and that would definately mean the need for a 4x4....and as was pointed out maybe it is "better the devil you know". After all if we sold it the only thing we could afford after paying off debts would be another old Freelander.....and look what happened to our last one of those!!!

Heart definately wants to keep it. Its just beautiful and I love driving it. Head is nagging at me, but with your tales (especially M3DPO) maybe it wouldn't be so bad. I try and budget for the cost of running the cars so maybe we could make it work.

The only thing worrying me most at the moment is we seem to have a strange fault that only happens occassionally.....have any of you heard about this happening before.....

Driving the car and all is great. Often we have done 25/30 plus miles of combined driving, even been on the dual carriageway for a while at speeds upto 70mph. Then just suddenly, without any application from us, there is a juddering from the brakes (front nearside wheel). If I stop the car and look at the wheel you can feel the heat coming from it....but it has not been seized on and the brake pads are not worn out. If I then drive off, its fine. In fact it did it this morning, after 25 miles and 20 minutes or so from start. Then didn't do it again at all, and I probably covered another 100 miles. We were picking up the fixed Passat and our mechanic looked at the brake pads and said they were fine, and he could tell that brake was not seized on. He thought it was probably electrical. Anyone had a similar problem?????

Again, thank you all for your posts. It does make me feel a bit better about maybe keeping the car. We do love it and it has been the best and most useful car we have ever owned. The only other thing tempting me to sell is the fact its still worth quite a bit and I could pay debts off with it BUT I would need another 4x4....... Rolling Eyes

Arrrggghhhh I need to make a decision!!!!! Confused
