Discovery 3 diesel extremely slow to accelerate

Discovery 3 diesel extremely slow to accelerate... Auto gear box .......

When pulling away over the last couple of days my discovery hardly moves until the engine revs get to approx 3000 rpm ( not sure if this is anything to do with the turbo cuttting in ?) Then it accelerates as normal going through the gears normaly in the auto box.

Ive tried taking it out of the auto mode and putting it in first to accelerate but it still hardly moves till about 3000 rpm.

Ive been trying to work out if its the gearbox causing the problem or the engine.... and im sure its the engine as the box changes up and down fine above 3000 rpm.

if you kick the acceleartor to the floor to try and pull away the acceleration is as slow as ever

It was intermittant at first but now its all the time.

Was concerned it could be fuel contamination but im sure it would be running rough and the engine idles and runs fine just doesnt accelerate below 3000 rpm


Its extremely dangerous as you could walk faster out of a junction (and had a very near miss with an angry truck driver up my backsude this morning )

No messages shown on the dash, although a transmission fault has come and go approx 6 times over the last 12 months but its affected nothing.


Please could someone tell me if there is a fix for this or if it has to go to the dealer

Tried disconnecting the battery over night to see if it made any difference but nothing re set .......

Is there anything that can be done for sticking guide vanes ( ie i work as an aviation technician and we can lubricate them on the aircraft?) or is it a sealed unit on the discovery ?

What does the EGR do as some people I see suggest blanking this off if there is a loss of power .. and if so where is it ?

There was a software update to 'exercise the ' the vanes to stop them sticking but if the vanes have stuck it is usually a new turbo. But given your job maybe you be the first find a way fix it? Idea

Could be EGR failure but this will bring up adifferent fault code. Have you had the fault codes read yet?

Agreed sounds like EGR valves
Not the end of the world if it is, a couple of hours to blank and the car will run even better.

EGR valves would register a fault in the diagnostic though, even on IDS Question

For the £5 parts cost and 2hrs of your time, I'd blank the EGRs first and see if that fixes it.

The AA mechanic man has just been out and plugged a diagnostics computer in and there are no faults logged

He thinks the EGR fault would have shown up on his computer if they were the cause ?

The car is a a 54 plate

He suggesting Landrover plug it into their diagnostics computer ... Im a bit fearfull of the cost !!!

EGR.

Don't always show on the computer, also some clear after ignition cycle.

Exact description of how ours drove with dead EGR's....

Then I'd repeat my advice above.

If that doesn't clear it, also worth reading THIS THREAD and reviewing the pdf document linked in it. This suggests you may be able to get an open-ended spanner on the VNT actutor, so you'd be able to tell if it is stuck or not. No idea how accessible this is on a Disco3 (just 'cos I haven't looked Smile )

Hi foxiey, sounds like EGR valves to me. My54 was doing exactly same as yours. I had it on 3 seperate diognostic machines (1 at landrover dealers) and no fault codes came up at all. Just got my blanking plates delivered and i'm just about to change them now so i'll let you know how it goes.
If it is EGR's go and see BAS on the forum and get them from there.
