Discovery 3 Misfuel

Yup I have also done the dreaded misfuel on a Disco 3.

Put 10 ltres of unleaded on top of about 15 litres of diesel, wasn't sure the best way forward, various stories so added another 60 litres of diesel and drove off.

Car still going great, since addeed another 3 x 10 litres (30ltrs) and some diesel additive.

Have not booted the car and all seems well, only driven 150 miles or so.

Have i been lucky or have I still got a large bill to come, I keep getting mised views, some very gloomy and some very positive.

Who has experince under similar circumstances - 10 ltrs of petrol in a Disco 3.

I'm just dreading the day I do this! It looks so easy to do these days since the garages seem to want to confuse us all with new colours of handles etc!

Fingers crossed you've not done any lasting damage!!

I cant imagine there's any damage done if it's still going OK, bear in mind it used to be common practice to add a moderate proportion of petrol to a tank of diesel in years gone by to stop it from freezing in the winter.

Please bare this in mind if u ever do make the mistake of adding Petrol to a Diesel Car !
Add roughly 1 litre of Engine oil to every 10 litres of Petrol that u add, its not a precise measurement i made it up Whistle
Embarassed

The more Oil the merrier ! essentially what you are doing is turning the Petrol into 2 stroke !!

Try then to get rid of the lethal load as soon as possible by driving as far as you can to burn it off then fill with a full tank of proper heavy oil Diesel type stuff !

Its safer than starting it up and corroding all the rubber seals in the fuel pump and whatever else it may do and its cheaper than having some eco green envionmentally sensative waste disposal Invoice Plus V.A.T.

REMEMBER ! you heard it here first !

Free pints of beer gladly accepted in reward for said error at the Pump ! Thumbs Up

but they were different beasties and very tolerant. Our lot are prima donnas and a bit sniffy about that. Not as sniffy as some would have us believe, though.

We should do a poll on all the misfuellers and try to correlate size of dropped cod against long-term outcomes. It may well be that most of us have over-reacted when the dreaded happened...

Oh, and what proportion were at BP stations, with their confusing colouring and names??

Yea mine was at BP! Still so far after 14 litres of unleaded followed by about 60 litres of diesel,a bottle of Redex, 360ish miles it seems to drive ok, get a black puff out of rear now and then and it's still got no oomph below 2k revs apart from that it's "A" ok Mr. Green

And I got a map and blanked off me EGR's!

That actually sounds like a really good idea, as you say, it would be interesting to see what - if any long term effects have been suffered where it's just been "burnt off", or how much it has cost to resolve it "at the pump" (via the drain tank and chuck it all away method,) also across the whole range of vehicles, not just D3's.

Only thing is - who's gonna set it up Question

It seems I had some bad fuel in Phalaborwa [central Kruger National Park RSA] when returning from our trip to Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The car idles rough and battle to start, but boy, she still goes great with a 2 tonne Jurgens Xplorer caravan in tow on return to Pretoria [Approx 500Km].

Car was booked in on Saturday and diagnosed with "100% Injector failures on numbers 4, 5, and 6" - still in ICU and waiting for LRSA to make final decision on parts to replace [she is still under Motor plan]

When asking the techie if this could be overcomed by using Diesel cleaning additives, he said no. My concern is how the dirt got through the filter. But time will tell.

One of these Mods with lots of spare time? Whistle Whistle

Embarassed Sorry, chaps! Embarassed But I seem to be cr@p at setting that sort of thing up...

Is it possible to organise a multi-column poll?

{Name - amount of petrol - Diesel in tank - started or not - drained or not - how did it run? - action taken - short term running - long term survival} That's a lot of info for a Forum poll, n'est-ce pas?
