Discovery 3 with potential MOST problem directed to Wiggs! |
|
Hi Wiggs as well as Geoff, Bodsy and all,
My quest for a cheap(ish) D3 has thrown up a 2006 HSE with a goodly (191,000) mileage on it.
Good points: It has always been serviced by the supplying stealer and then by a LR specialist, so I reckon that it has been looked after properly with regular oil changes etc.
The new MOT shows no advisories, and the previous three haven't had advisories incidentally.
Body is good as the inside, so what's bad?
The sat nav shows the Land Rover logo and no more, and the radio lights up but no sound.
Word has it that the MOST is the problem with one of the units not working!
Wiggs, you mention a Fibre Optic Loop to go round and find the unit at fault. Where did you get yours and are they available to buy?
I'm going to buy an IID Tool BT from whoever sells them at the best price, anybody recommend a company, I sent a PM to Disco-Mikey but I think he is busy as I haven't had a reply.
Would the IID Tool indicate which unit is faulty or is it a case of unearthing each unit and by-passing it to find the fault?
Lastly if the suspect unit can be found, a swap with one from fleabay maybe is the answer.
As it is a 2006 and the mileage on it will necessitate a timing belt change, would I be best advised to change the water pump as well as the oil pump? Tensioner obviously as well as the idlers, and I was thinking of renewing the serpentine belt along with the tensioner and idler pulleys?
Anything else I should keep an eye out for before I buy it, possibly tomorrow!
Best
Ian

Search eBay for Audi Optical Loop.
Most of the time, it’s the TMC module (located in the rear boot panel, near the phone module).
Loop out the TMC most cable first, may be worthwhile buying two, then you can loop out the BT module at the same time.
Then next is to loop out the screen.
So after TMC or BT fault, next up is head unit or the Amp under the seat. Process of elimination I’m afraid.
No point looping out the head unit as you won’t get anything anyway without that. Same for the amp.
Fault codes may indicate a fault on one of the modules, or it could give you a Most communication failure (no use to man nor beast!). Bodsys Brake Bible

If its an Auto it could be worth doing a gearbox flush, there is some good info on here about flushing a D3.

Thanks Bodsy for all that very useful info.
As soon as I have typed this I'm off to Ebay!
Fireburst, good call. If I buy it I might just take it to Bristol Transmissions and get them to do a flush with their machine. I'm in Cardiff and they are the closest unless anybody knows of a place in Cardiff who does a 'renal flush'!
Anybody with other suggestions and any re the IID Tool BT?
