Discovery 3 TDV6 Alternator |
|
Hi just joined the site because I have an issue.
I have a D3 TDV6 on an 09 plate, battery light came on about a week ago and battery died shortly after that. I suspected the alternator to be the fault so today I have changed for a new alternator. Before refitting the viscus fan I thought I’d run it just to check everything was okay.
Started up but battery light is still on ☹️ Checked the plug connection and live feed both fine and it’s a new alternator. Back end of the old one had some melted plastic where it’s obviously got hot so I’m convinced it was the alternator at fault.
Any suggestions?

Sometimes when the alternator dies it discharges the battery and unfortunately ruins it. You may need a new battery The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything;
They just make the best of everything they have.

I have the battery on charge currently was reading 12.6v so on the charger now, I didn’t think that would make a huge difference but I guess if it’s at 50% or less then the alternator isn’t going to charge it so that may be the issue, charger now saying 75% charged and showing 14.6v so I’ll give it a few hours and fingers crossed 🤞

It’s quite common for a dud alternator to take the battery out as well, what alternator did you fit?- anything less than a OEM expect problems sooner rather than later, D3 are notorious for regifting non OEM alternators.
At what stage and what with did you take the readings?- you have to be more specific to get correct replies. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The light does not go out instantly. Wait 1
Minute or so.
Check the voltage.
And check the 5A ALT fuse in the fuse box next to the battery

The battery is new although did run it for a few miles with the screwed alternator on the new battery to get me home from where it gave up the ghost. The alternator removed clearly has had a fault as some of the plastic had melted. I did wonder if there was a fuse somewhere which may have blown.
I have put the battery on charge for the last few hours on a good workshop charger now showing 14.8v at the charger and 100% charged. Took the charger off and ran at 3000rpm for a while maybe not a minute. Tomorrow in daylight I’ll get the volt meter on it and check the fuse.

Check the cable from the alternator to the battery is not rubbing and shorting on the engine. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thank you guys, just went out and checked. The 5amp Alt fuse was blown quickly popped a new one in and started but still showing battery light, I will swap the battery off my other truck in the daylight tomorrow and if the battery and fuse make no difference I’ll have to do further digging 🙉

Check fuse hasn’t blown again and run the car for a few minutes.

Seems, you have a possible short. There was a problem with the cable from the alternator/starter shorting to the diff housing, due to rubbing, on its way to the battery.

when that large cable shorts the starter motor won't crank the car!

Thank you all for your tips, I have removed the new alternator again this morning re checked the plug fitting and checked the positive feed which were all good so replaced the alternator again. Re checked the fuse which was okay although I did notice some corrosion on the one I put in last night so put a new one in and BINGO started and after a few seconds the battery light went out. Not sure if it was that or just some pure luck but it’s fine, starts no problem and no battery light, been on a run and all seems good so fingers crossed it’s fixed it. Thank you again for all the suggestions. 😁
