Drevilish - where did you get your lpg done, and which system is it?

Enjoying reading the challenges of ownership on here and impressed with the camaraderie.

Anyone prepared to recommend an independent specialist to give mine the once over and deliver me a verdict? Within, I don’t know, an hour of Twickenham?

Thanks

You could try :http://www.dakar.co.uk/index.html. They serviced mine when I first got it and did the plug change.
Before you go lpg, just think about when and how often you will use it. A non lpg is often more sort after than a converted car.
Lots of jobs are DIY - MAF and throttle body cleaning plus puv valve. Do a search and you will find a few threads with easy to follow guides on how to do a lot of esssential V8 work to keep them running in tip top condition.
Do you have a sunroof?

Thanks, should’ve asked earlier, I was out that way last weekend...

I hear what you say about the lpg - just trying to put some of green credentials back on the shelf and save giving so much money to HMRC... was also ambivalent due to the susposedly soft valve seats in the aj engine, meaning seat inserts and or valve saver and then discovered liquid injection instead of gas injection, thus also giving an ‘intercooler’ affect... engine bay very cramped so not sure I want to add additional injectors blah blah, as I said - ambivalent Neutral

Yep, has a sunroof, will be checking out the drains next time I get half hour and the weather allows

Cheers

I imagine it’s different in UK than here but I looked last fall at both LPG conversion and Ethanol conversion.

Long story short - Couldn’t find anyone willing to even entertain the idea of doing a LPG conversion as the vehicle is, well, a very rare occurrence here. Also, no money to be had from the government as the car wasn’t SOLD as a LPG vehicle nor was the conversion done before a sale at a dealer. So aftermarket kits and conversions aren’t eligible for installation credit. Hmmm.... Whistle

Ethanol - I could find two companies willing to do a conversion; basically have the LR ECU piggyback the ethanol kit ECU which would be the ultimate decision maker on how much air and fuel to inject into the engine. On paper (excel actually) the payback for the kit and installation would be approximately one year. Some inofficial reports say that as ethanol burns differently it might eventually damage the engine.
The conversion kit manufacturer disagrees, obviously.

In the end I did neither - future of ethanol as a fuel in cars is slightly in doubt as flexfuel vehicles aren’t manufactured as much and their sales have dropped each year. Also, as the government controls the pricing of fuel it’s unclear whether ethanol will be staying at the current level or rise. Ethanol, RE85, is priced at 0.999 e/L currently and has been for a number of years. A car on ethanol uses approximately 15-20% more fuel per kilometer since ethanol has a lower caloric value. As a comparison, 95E10 is priced 1.30 - 1.5 e/L.

So far, the best savings I’ve had is having replaced a stuck caliper and having recalibrated the parking shoes. Consumption dropped from 16.8 to 13.7 L/100 km. So 0.137 dL/km.

And welcome to the V8 club Thumbs Up

As far as I’m aware Methanol as a fuel is not widely available in the UK, it is added to petrol, up to 10%, to fulfill some eu directives I believe, but it’s not something I’ve really considered. I only thought about methanol and water injection as an induction cooling method should I go for an lpg (vapour) system. There is an interesting section on v8 tuning here https://jec.org.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=10761
which set the imagination running! And eventually leads onto M/W injection...

I also think lpg has lost ground to electric hybrid as the consumers choice... much easier when the manufacturer has taken all the ‘phaff’ out of it.

Need to look at service schedules next, cars done 85 thou miles and there seem to be many references to the biggie at 105 thou. Shocked

Next need to learn how posting here works, should probably move this into a more general thread Wink

Here’s the maintenance schedule. The 7 year/105k service is big for diesel, doesn’t apply to us.

Welcome Thumbs Up .

Only update from mine recently is what I thought was a shudder from the gearbox was actually a stuck brake piston. Drives smooth as silk now. Result, and very, very relieved!

I'll sort some more clips out soon.

I've got arches being painted and I'm going to remove the door strips next week.

Stop it - your making me jealous Laughing I like the painted arches look, makes the car look more 'street' than 'farmyard'

Anyone sorted out the permanent solution to the faded washer jet blocks on the front bumpers.
