I did think it wasn't outrageous at first, but then it's +VAT and a mileage allowance of 500 miles. We'll be doing about 200 more than that at 50ppm and the excess is 2k

Try U-drive - I just ran a quick quote and it returned £720 although that has a 200 mile a day limit and 8p per mile excess.
I think your 500 mile allowance is good as most hire companies limit to around 300 miles a day based on previous experience.

The 500 mile limit was for the 10 days.
Got some better quotes from those 2 suggestions- cheers.
I was 100% planning to buy one but thought I'd test one for our honeymoon. Should hopefully determine that the man can justify the need for deep pockets!
you'll be to distracted to do a proper test … and she might leave you whilst you're playing with the D4 and not testing her.

as ur interested in buying one , could u speak to ur local dealer and then if u do buy one to then take the cost of the hire off the purchase price so it’s not dead money

For £3,000 you could but a ropey D3 or a decent D2 and flog it afterwards for little net cost
EDIT - for £900 I might lend you mine for two weeks and bung in a tank full of fuel D3 07 SE - still going strong
D3 07 HSE - gone to car heaven
FL1 - gone to Romania
D3 05 HSE - gone to a divorce diet
D1 V8 manual - gone but not forgotten
RR Classic - gone to car heaven
Jeeps, Lexus, X-trails... Too many to name..
