I would suggest the Safari does the same (cleaner air)and since the pipe inside the body doesn't have water drainage holes would be better at keeping the water out. I think some member/s with the RAI have taken the pipe inside the guard and used silicon to seal the holes.
Be warned about wading too deep.

Is there a big difference?
I've had a RAI on my want list for a while now but it's 95% for aesthetic reasons!

Never noticed any difference in power with mine either and I can't see it noticably effecting power as it's pretty free flowing. I'm in the process of making my RAI watertight.

That's a little more reassuring then, maybe it can stay on my want list now! Only downside is they suit black Discovery's the least in my opinion

I recently fitted a RAI.
I am afraid I did it because it looks cool ( 8) ). Not happy to hear that it results in a loos of power. Does it means that now I should have it remapped? Are you giving me an excuse to do it?????
Anyway I haven't noticed any difference.
Has anyone got an idea of what sort of loos of power we are talking about?

Any proof of this? I can't say I've noticed any difference other than increased wind noise 2003 BMW M5- 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black

To have any performance loss, you have to go way faster than the vehicle can.
There is no "vacuum" effect with the RAI.
Also to have any benefit if the erroneous forward facing snout of the snorkel, same applies here,
You have to go faster than the car can to have any positive effect at all.
IMHO it only looks strange to have snorkel facing forward, you have all junk coming in easier.
Waterspray, dust and so.

Wind noise is not that bad at all.
In my experience a roof rack is way worse and more noticeable.
