Discovery 4 ticking noise at idle when hot.

Recently I've become aware that my engine sounds very clackety clack when it's idling hot. Seems quieter when cold.

I'm not sure if it getting worse, so I've recorded cold and hot from left and right hand wheel arches, which is where it seems loudest on the drivers side.

What do you think?

Drivers side cold.

Passenger side cold

Drivers side hot.

Passenger side hot.

I know it quite possibly me been paranoid! But earlier in the year I was in Ireland with AndrewS, and he did pass a comment that mine sounded like a bag of spanners compared to his new 3.0 D5!

Certainly seems to be louder on the right hand side of engine, when viewed from rear. I feel like it's coming from the injector area, but I have tried running it hot with the engine cover off, and the injector foam covers lifted, and it hardly makes a difference!

There is a timing chain in there and they have been known to snap Sad

SWMBO has just suggested checking for any metal particles in the oil on the end of the dipstick. She has now been educated in the reason what that can't be done. Her reply was "What idiot thought that was a good idea?". She is wise beyond belief. Thumbs Up

I'll let the dealer technician have a listen. I've got it covered by WD Lux care, so not panicking yet!

I have a similar noise when hot. Didn't have it before GS Thames Ditton changed the steering rack because of an oil leak pointed out to them 14 months previously!! (There is more)!!
Whilst they believe in coincidences I do not. First time in they changed the tensioner which was definitely wobbling but no difference once it was home and hot.
When it went in for the second time the Service Advisor had a copy of the noise and the techs heard it as well. They then informed me that they couldn't hear the noise but there were no metal particles in the oil. OK to drive they said. Enough of their cynicism, they drove it for less than 2 miles from cold. Am presently discussing this and other issues with JLR.
Went to LR Authorised Service Centre with great reviews. Tech listened and heard. Booked in for September 4th and they thought that limited use would be best. 27k from new by the way.
Will keep you posted.

didn't realise they can snap , but suppose with anything mechanical things can indeed fail Big Cry

also read where the timing chains can make a noise for the first few seconds of the engine starting

No, I'm going to use Wimbledon Land Rover Service Centre. Friends use them and are very pleased. Parting of the ways for me and GS after 10 years of LR and Jag servicing.
I'll put my noise up as soon as I've worked out how.

Went into Wimbledon Land Rover yesterday. Investigations on-going. Will keep you posted. If I knew how I could attach a video file of the noise.
