Discovery 8 speed strange gearbox noises can community help?

Hi I have a 2015 Discovery … with an 8 speed gearbox ………. the car has been back to the dealership twice ……. with a strange noise that kinda sounds like the gearbox ………. the noise is apparent when pulling away at light feathered throttle shifting from 1st 2nd – 2nd 3rd …. the noise is like a strange hesitant swooshing noise – that appears to be gearbox related. Interestingly I test drove another Disco with 2000 miles on the clock ……… and bingo it made the same noise…..I was told that it was the complex sequencing and redirecting of airflow relating to the twin turbo setup…..which, when using light throttle induces the noise.
The noise can easily be reproduced and I am wondering if other Disco owners could try this out ….. and report back to me…..
Get the car normally hot … bit of town driving. Then, stop put the car in drive – keep your foot on the foot brake and depress the accelerator to about quarter way and release – the engine will pull a bit against the brakes …. as you release the accelerator it should make the noise. This is just a way of inducing the noise …and is not normal use, I do understand – I don’t have an issue with this. However, I am getting this under normal sedate driving conditions….. once you hear the noise listen out normally and see if it happens…(go to work without superb audio system on!)
As an aside I have been in a Jaguar XF with the same engine …. with 6 speed gearbox … this is totally silent…..
Hope you can all help...
Richard

I have not yet tried your specific test, but I know mine makes a faint whooshing/whistling at low speeds, that comes and goes with the accelerator position. I thought it was the LP turbo doing its stuff at low speeds, the bigger turbo doesn't kick in until higher revs occur.

AFAIK its normal. I am on 51k now (2013 car) and its the same as when new.

Hi - thanks for the reply ........ yeah the noise does not appear to be your normal turbo whistles etc....
this is quite a mechanical swoosh sometimes followed by a mild clunk...even the Landrover senior technican's initial thought was gearbox...........

Re torque converter - this never crossed my mind can they make such noises???

I think mine does the same. I get a mechanical whine with a clonking afterward, but only when accelerating rapidly from a standstill. It sounds like it is skipping a gear or something. It doesn't made the noise all the time and the noise only lasts a couple of seconds or so.

My 08MY 2.7 has always made the whooshing too. I too put it down to the torque converter going through various stages of lockup. It also goes through different stages as the box is warming up. When it locks up you then get a different noise, which is the vibration of the diesel engine resonating at high frequency through the car. Most noticeable from about 1700-2000 rpm. Apparently also 'characteristic' of these cars.

The car has 235k km on it now and the noise has not changed at all over that time, so I doubt it's detrimental. Just a characteristic of the transmission. Not one that I like, mind you. For the longest time I was expecting something to blow to pieces right in the middle of it making that noise!

automatic gearbox discovery 2015 TDV6

Hello,

I think I have the same sound as discribed here , on my Discovery (indeed an automatic 8 gearbox) TDV6 2015. It sounds more like a "soft crackling Coke can" . :?:

I went in Belgium to the Landy dealer and there they said that it is indeed not a normal sound, but that they do not know where it comes from!.

Can I get a sound recording posts in this forum and if so how?

Thanks, Eric,

Easiest way to put a sound on here (well that I found) was take a vid clip and put it on YouTube, then paste the link. Thumbs Up
