Drivetrain clacking noise help

Hi all, wondering if any of you have experienced this...

Call from wife whilst I was away, loud clicking/clacking sound from under car when driving. Ordered 2 cv joints ready for when I got home, but on driving it I’ve found that it happens even in a straight line under load, maybe more so when coming off or on the throttle.

Dived underneath, Had a quick pull on things, wondering if it’s the front propshaft...it slides back and fore on the internal splines freely but there seems to be more rotational play in the splines than I would expect....

Anyone got any thoughts....diff maybe? Just thought I’d ask before I whip the cv’s off unnecessarily....

Edited to say I’ve now noticed the rear propshaft centre bearing is totally shot...anyone had a clicking sound because of that?

Thanks, Rich.

I would start with the rear prop and see if it cures it, being a ladder chassis noises do travel along it and sound like there coming from somewhere else

Had something similar whilst on vacation last year driving around Kruger Park. At low speed it was this click, click sound, typical of a stuffed CV joint. If I stopped and backed up, it would be gone for a while, if you turned it would come back, thus I expected a CV. Back home I took it to my local Indy. we had to drive around for half an hour before we could replicate it. Back in the Shop it went onto the 2 poster lift. With him inspecting and me "driving" it was clear that it was the front prop causing it.

Once off it became clear that the CV on the prop shaft had excessive play in, something you could not really "feel" whilst it was on the car.

Quick update for anyone who may be interested....it was the rear propshaft centre bearing. The bearing rubber surround had totally collapsed, causing the centre bearing to spin with the propshaft. It would catch in its housing and create a force which made the backlash in the front propshaft internal splines cause the sound.
