DRLs....AGAIN!
Hi all,
MY2012 Disco 4. I've enabled Scandinavian DRLs but as I suspected, these are the fairy lights and low beam lights as well as the rear lights on permanently. Common sense would suggest this now makes the "auto" light setting pretty much pointless apart from illuminating the cabin (clock, heater controls, etc) when it gets dark.
So, my question is. Can you, or has someone, modified the config file to stop the low beams and to just have the fairy lights come on when the DRL setting is enabled?
When I upgrade to the MY14 lights, I'm hoping just for the LED signature strip to light up rather than that and the low beam..
Thanks

Lucero, as far as I know you cannot achieve what you want (the signature LEDs illuminated all the time) through a config change. There has been a lot of talk that it could be done through wiring changes, but I do not think anyone has actually done it (probably because it involves cutting the wire to the LEDs from the sidelight supply and adding a permanent live to that pin on the headlamp connector). There is no permanent live wire to use in the D4 headlamp plug pre MY2014 (unless you have AFS lights in which case there might be a permanent live for the AFS motors).
Using MY14 lights (which do have built in DRLs) the wiring is different on a MY14 car so you will have to make changes to the wiring loom of a non- MY2014 car - someone has done that with MY14 lights as part of a D3 to D4(14) conversion but can't remember who.
Whichever way you choose to do it you will not achieve it without extra wiring and cutting/splicing of existing wires

Ok cool. So if I upgrade to MY14 lights, I'll have the signature "halo" light, but the dipped beam will remain lit too?
I know Robbo has done a D3 to D4MY14 upgrade. I wondered if the light module within the unit itself would have changed. Technically the fairy lights are not bright enough to be compliant with EU DRL regs, but the signature DRLs from MY14 are.
With BMW, you can crack open the config files and choose what lights are DRL and even their intensity. I was hoping the same might be true of the CCF files

I don't know the detail but the wiring is different for MY14 in the headlamp plug (probably to add the permanent live for the DRLs amongst other things) I doubt that the DRLs will work at all using MY14 lights without you making changes to the wiring of the car - but others have done this so will know better than I and there are posts about it.
Of course MY14 may also have different settings available in the CCF but of course you will not have access to those on a pre MY14 car. As I said before you will need to make wiring changes to get what you want whether you use MY14 lights or not.

I have these on my D3/D4 upgrade.....
I turn on the 'fairy' lights on by turning on the side lights and they light up .....
Think I have the infamous Landmark ones though that are hard to source ...
D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.
D4 rear upgrade - Narpys helped with that bit
Flack for problem solving and D4 Bluetooth Install/ D4 Heated Steering wheel with Flappy paddles n BBS enabling kit
Disco Mikeys work - Serviced, EGR blanking and 4x4 software upgrade, 3 flash indicators.

Thanks Bob. Sadly nothing special about the landmark lights, all fairy lights come on in position 1 (side lights) if fitted which is most HSE and abive models from 2010.
Having to move my light switch every time I get in the car defeats the object of the auto setting

Thought I was missing something .....
AS you can see my solution to turn a switch seemed very simple D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.

am I right in thinking that not all d4 style lights fitted to d3s have these fairy lights/ landmark lights? because I have d4 look lights on mine and no fairy lights light up at all. although they appear to have the halo ? is there something not connected in my wiring? if I look behind the headlight, I can see an aftermarket resistor fitted and spliced into the wiring, so I guess at some point there must have been l.e.ds fitted/working. ( or would this be for the rear leds somehow?

If your D4 lights come from a D4 Landmark or HSE they should have the fairy lights if they are from a lower model they are just blanks in the holes Cheers Ian

Hi guys,
I have a 2011 SE and the fairy lights do not come on when switching to side lights.
Is there any way to enable this?--

If they don't come on when the sidelights are turned on then you don't have them fitted, it may look like they are there but they are only blanks in the holes, the only way to get them in that case it to replace the headlamp units Cheers Ian

Ok, probably best if you fully explain your symptoms.
Are you actually saying that when you turn on your sidelights the rear lights come on but you have zero illumination from the front lights?Land Rover - Turning Drivers into Mechanics Since 1948
