Take advice & search the internet because of the unpredictable security situation and the threat of terrorism.

Avoid all travel to the Sinai Peninsula, due to terrorist activity and ongoing military operations by the Egyptian Armed Forces. This does not include the coastal resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, the area within the Sharm el-Sheikh perimeter barrier, the Sharm el-Sheikh International Airport and the areas of Hadaba, Naama Bay, Nabq, Sharks Bay and Sharm el Maya.

Avoid the Western desert and Libyan border area -Avoid all travel to the area within 50 kilometres of the border with Libya, the Siwa Oasis, the Western Desert, including the oases of Bahariya, Bawati, Dakhla and Farafra, and the White and Black deserts, due to smuggling, terrorist activities, the presence of armed groups and ongoing military operations.

Make sure your travel & medical insurance cover Egypt.

Good luck.

Personally, i wouldn't go there. Ive been there a couple of times, but not for probably 10 years.

I went there to dive mainly. First time in 2005, i stayed in the Ras Mohammed National Park on a Bedouin camp for a week. I then went onto a live aboard dive boat. Overall, a great trip with lots of diving. I was diving with the university doing a bit of scientific diving, so was away from the tourist type stuff. My bedroom:

The second time, i stayed in a 5 star hotel type in Sharm El Sheik and did a bit of diving, but it wasn't the main focus. Did the usual holiday type thing. The overriding memory for me was getting very ill. To the point i have to have a drip put in by a doctor and was very ill. I don't think I've ever been that ill at any point, and never want to be again.

It seems common that western people get ill in Egypt, and for that reason as well as the security risks now, i wouldn't ever go back there on holiday. I also think there are much nicer places to visit, without the risk of getting as ill.

I expect its cheap, but its cheap for a reason.

What about Mexico? I went there a couple of years ago and loved it.

Sorry, its a great place, better not go to Paris or London either............

The TUI Sensatori is in Sharm and is great, we have been 3 times, best beach in Sharm and well away from the hustle and bustle.

This year we are trying Marsa Alam (only because Sharm hadn't reopened at the time of booking) and the Tui Alaya Blue, great looking hotel new last year and getting great reviews.

decent enough place. we go to hurghada and there is some very nice hotels. a lot have both pool and private beach. the wife never goes out of the hotel apart from a bit of shopping but we did book swimming with dolphins one year which was £60 each and we got a whole hour with the dolphins on our own as a group of 4. you do tend to get pestered by the shopkeepers as your walking down the street but apart from that it's fine.
steinenberger hotels are decent with good selection of food.
visas can be bought at the airport after you land cost £20 paid in English.
getting out is a bit harder you have 3 security checks at the airport and although you might get to the airport 2 and half hours early for the flight you wont have time to do any duty free shopping

We were in the Western Desert last November and were staying in the Siwa Oasis area. Had a brilliant time - swimming, dune bashing, ruined city and some fascinating temples. Excellent food. Very few tourists which is not surprising as we got there by 12 hour overnight coach from Cairo.
We had tea in teh Western Desert :

Yes I know it is not a Disco!

I am not gainsaying the FCO advice and saying it is safe but they as ever err on the side of caution. Also Egyptians are friendly people who want and need tourists. When away from the big tourist areas such as Luxor and Aswan the hassle disappears - we experienced none on our trip out of Cairo, only helpfulness.

I once fequently visited for work and now my daughter lives in Cairo as she is studying Arabic. I have never been for a beach holiday but highly recommend going to Cairo (but pollution v bad), Luxor and Aswan. There are quite a few dual centre trips available.

We avoid meat due to poor hygiene and have never been ill. Use bottled water for everything incl brushing teeth. Be patient, have a sense of humour and tip small but often - you'll have a great time. We'll be going back in teh Spring. Do avoid Ramadan esp if you wish to have a beer.
