Andrew, just read your post and you have my thoughts & sympathies. Brings our petty difficulties & squabbles into perspective. I hope we can help in some little way.
Andrew, sorry for your loss. Filling a gap left by the passing of a loved one who's been around you for 30+ years will not be easy but I am sure the D3 will try hard to keep you busy.....
Just a thought, has noby tried or played with the idea of odifying an old school park brake leverfrom a D2 and made it work on a D3? By this removing the complete EPB system and going old school?
Hmmm, the old school seems interesting, but I would go the L322 route.
All LRs up to D3 and L322 (apart from freelander) had a unique drum brake at the end of the transfer box.
But Freebies and FFRRs had dual drums inside the rear discs.
And the FFRR was initailly old skool and later (2006 on) converted to the horrendous EPB thing.
Maybe lever and actuator cable could be transferred (bodged) from a FFRR.
Please note that wheelbase is almost the same in FFRR and D3, so could make things easier...
Any brave ones out there?Regards, Robert

Andrew, I've been absent from here of late so have only just seen your post from earlier this year. You showed great kindness and understanding, extending a helping hand when my health took a turn for the worse a few years back so it is heart-warming to see that the camaraderie of the forum is helping you in your time of need. If our paths should cross in the real world, the drinks are on me.
Did anyone ever get a batch of these secondary repair bushes (as per AndrewW's drawing) manufactured? Or even a quote? If not I'm planning to get a small batch made up.Previously:

Just read thru this thread as my handbrake has started screaming and does not work. Very informative thread and my symapthy goes to you Andrew.
If you do get these made up I would be interested as the LR part is obviously not up to the job long term.....

Many thanks Andrew for your fantastic endeavours getting to the bottom of the EPB issues and sincere condolences on your loss. I lost my sister to cancer when she was just 32 and she left a hole in my life that cannot be filled, so I empathise strongly.
My EPB has been screaming for years - I've had the 55 plate from 6 months old - I regret not removing the fuse between MoT tests because I only ever applied it when absent minded - but it seized big-time at a level crossing, leaving me blocking the entry to the crossing after the train had passed. I didn't use the emergency release, instead turned off the ignition and removed the key, which made the electronics 'forget' that the brake was supposed to be applied, and willingly disengaged when I pushed the switch down after restarting. I've managed to remember not to use is since, but with my MoT test just 2 months away now so I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get the EPB replaced.
My local independent 4x4 quoted £1100 fitted so I think by taking the they have lost a customer.
I'll keep the old EPB, and definitely open it up to see the extent of the damage. It's perfectly possible that the 'clutch' has stripped itself beyond redemption. If it hasn't, I'd be interested in a refurb kit. If it has, I'd be more interested in a kit which replaces the clutch and therefore the gears too.
Frankly, I'm disgusted that seemingly nylon gears have been used in such an expensive component. They look to be about the same size and quality as those in my £30 cross-cut shredder which I recently cleaned to remove years of accumulated paper dust. It also has helical gears on the motor shaft, brass on the motor shaft driving a larger nylon reducing gear and there was significant longitudinal movement in the motor shaft when the motor was reversed. I wouldn't mind betting the same is true of the EPB's motor. I expect the helical gears are much less prone to jumping under strain and this is probably considered the weakest link, rather than the motor bearings.

Can't you just fit a standard hand brake assembly from a D2? The hardest part would be securing the brake lever assembly. Prob wouldnt look great but I am used to working on my old 90 so standards of finish are fairly low set.1985 LR90 for off road

Yes , as mentioned before , many thanks Andrew , a job well done.
I have just send an e mail to the manufacturer of the actuator to say they have an inferior product that they supply to Land Rover.

Andrew
I dont own a landrover but love the product, however that is a small distraction; until now I didn't read the fulness of this tread so had no idea.
by now you are well past the initial lose, I would just like to say that around the same time I lost my father and being there at the end is a surreal experience as I'm sure you had the same,
I am sure your partner would be so proud that you go on even on such an issue as EPB.
if there is anything I can do or help just ask, everyday brings something new and new challenges but there are days when no distraction can interrupt the good memories a family share.Experience is a difficult teacher, because she gives the test first and then the lesson afterwards!!!!

Hi Andrew
Reading your post I have no words, a simple piece and easy to fix it and continue giving those problems in the EPB system
