engine cut whilst rolling backwards

went for a bit of a drive last night and went to go up a small but steep slope. approached the slope slowly and then drove up it and the front wheels crested and it wouldn't go any further (sandy slope and just seeing what it could and couldn't do) so I put my foot on the brake and as I went from acc to brake it rolled back and then the ABS kicked in when the tyres gripped on a tree root and the engine cut out. is this normal as it was still in drive not N or rev.

My car did that once, but I don't know if it's normal or not??
