engine hydro lock Question

Will an engine hydro lock with water coming through the air filter , any amount of water and would it do it instantly or over a few days Thanks ..mark

If you hydraulic a diesel engine, it can be done with less than 50ml of fluid in a cylinder, and it would be instant Thumbs Up

Thanks so the reason I asked was I had a new engine fitted in April this year and on 23rd of October it started tapping one min was fine next tapping , then eventually low oil pressure light , the firm that did the engine had it back and the mechanic that looked at the vehicle the day after I took it. Back rang and said there was water in the air filter and it had sucked water up I went down and sure the air filter was goosed soaked but I questioned how it went wrong on a dry day and how I’d driven it to them a week after it started tapping , that it was a top end tap and it was because of low oil pressure but he was adamant it had sucked water up that week because we had severe rain and eventually gone into the engine and caused the fault , but I wasn’t convinced and I was taught if a car had water it would stop immediately , it did start leaking oil a few days before and I did have a warning light for coolant the day before but I just feel that water I the air filter wasn’t the reason and there trying to pull a fast one .

D3 can wade through over 24" of water safely!

Sounds like oil pressure failure and nothing to with hydraulic lock, unless the head gasket failed. Even then it would be instant lock, and not progressive!

We're always warning members on here about repairs to these engines and finding reputable rebuilders.
Seems to me like someone's trying to have your pants down!

This is what I said , the rebuilder has been in business for over 60 years and done thousands of cars shocked to think there’d try this but it’s what I thought . Thanks for your comments

Well in fairness you don't get to stay in business for 60 years without doing your work to a decent standard. These engines though are tricky if you don't know their weaknesses, cut corners, or fit inferior components.

Even so, his insistence that HL is the cause of failure from external sources is nonsense. You simply couldn't have driven it to him if that were the case.

Why would you drive it with an oil leak and low coolant ??
Perhaps this is not a case of hydro lock, that dose happen instantly, and obviously it was still running.
It is however possible to get some water in the intake and do damage, like bend a conrod..... and the engine still run, just like if your air filter was soggy wet.

Was it a new engine, or a recon engine? Who did the work?

Engine was new done just over 10,000 miles done by cleasbys in meadow field it did loose a little coolant but not a lot topped back up was fine and did start to drip oil but again could be mentained was driven back to them at their request , but sat on my drive for a week after initial problem , just was thinking could it have been head gasket and that’s why I lost a little coolant my be 100 ml , but came on suddenly have cctv of it actually happening

When you say new, was it new from LR?

How much did you pay for it? The company you mention seems to suggest reconditioned, and it doesn't seem to be a company well known on here.

I believe it's about £6K for a decent recon unit from Oval Autos, or QP Online.

Lots of companies offer engines for £3k, but they seem to be shysters and not doing things properly. I expect the same vehicles are needing new engines again and again!
