| Engine knocking just stopped - thoughts |

2010 - D4 TDV6 - 126k - full LR service History.
Had the car 18months, maintained full service history and time belt changes etc. The car had been brilliant - love it. Wife driving, I get a call loud knocking, low power, black smoke. It happened pulling away from traffic lights and she pulled over immediately less than 20 seconds and no warning lights.
I go to see in my trusty P38 - just too reliable to get rid of!
It's knocking not tapping - sounds to me like big end? We get it recovered and taken to an independent LR specialist - told it needs a new engine. Too expensive to fix. So we have it trailered back home and started to read about the woes of the TDV6 engine. Still knocking when it comes off the trailer and parked up - while we decide what to do.
Left the D4 parked up for 3 weeks and kept battery charged. Needed to move it slightly so had to run it so went to start it. Still lots of black smoke, but that calmed down, and the knocking has gone?
Really confused - things just don't fix themselves - any thoughts?

Has it thrown a piston ring? Take oil filler cap off and see if it's blowing .

Went to see.
With the filler cap on at idle it sounds fine and normal. Took off filler cap and noise changes hearing a sound like popping/clapping top of an empty bottle ... no noticeable 'blowing' though?
