Engine knocking/Tapping - what would you do?

Hi All,

I have a disco 3, 2.7, S, 2006, ~167k on the clock.

Story:
Tues morning, dropped my wife off at work, went home (about 12mile round trip).
Tues eve, jumped in car to pick her up, started up, strange tapping/knocking. Running late, hoped it would go away. Sounds like a stereo typical diesel/tractor.
Arrived to pick her up, had a look under the bonnet hoping to see a wobbly fan or something, but aside from a small crack in a fin, all ok. Tapping still there, sounds very much like it's coming from the top of the engine...but could be anywhere!

Drove home, checked oil - nothing on the dip stick 🤦🏻‍♂️. Chucked in about 3L of 20w50 and 1L of 5w40 in blind panic. Started up, fingers crossed. Tapping still there. Ran around the block, no change.

Went to my local garage, they said it doesn't sound great, but suggested I went to my local landrover guys (Cavendish Motors in Chesterfield). Popped in to see them, who upon a brief visual inspection were suspecting the tensioner, but not sure. I then explained the oil situation, when they said "oh dear". And explained the cost to investigate/repair (3k upwards).

So, I don't have the cash for a repair, I don't have a garage or the tools or experience to look myself. So declared it a write off! ☹️

However, I failed to mention something odd that I cannot explain. After filling with about 4-5L (max) of oil, the dipstick was then showing well over Max! Why? Had it run dry in the first place? Or was it hiding somewhere? Can this happen, if so why? Seems odd to go from none to overfilled after putting in less than the capacity!

Anyway, my question is, what would you do? Even if I had the cash for a repair, it's probably not worth it. Car cost less when we bought it! Is there anything worth the time, money and effort to investigate before a sell it as scrap?

Any thoughts most welcomed!

Cheers,

I wasn’t going to suggest stripping route just yet. Flogging might be a better option. Whistle Whistle

Didn't take a video, but can do. I did find one on here yesterday on a similar thread that sounded very similar.

Will take one shortly and drop a link in here.

I think it was this thread:

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/knockingtap...t=knocking

I was unable to put any revs on, but may drag some one out to assist me and take another!

Have you checked for an exhaust blow? It’s to quick a frequency to be an injection seal. I think it sounds to be at crank shaft speed.

Not really. Had a quick listen around, but don't really know what's what under there tbh, and don't want to make anything worse - if it can get any worse!!!

I would suggest to rule out a potential worst case scenario.... remove the oil filter, drain it for an hour or more and cut it open, if there are metal parts in it, you can ditch the engine....

If not, it is worth investigating further / other scenarios..

Reading your low oil readings, mileage etc... and the fact that mine did sounded the same when a bearing was spun.... i am worried for you... Big Cry
 Best regards

@Motolab, thanks, sounds like the best plan! Will look to do this tomorrow or Friday all being well. Will report back. If there's nothing there, then will look further as you suggest. However, from everything I've come across I am not holding out too much hope! Sad

Any tips when it comes to looking at the oil filter? I've never experienced this before, so not sure how obvious it may (or may not) be!

Cheers,

Has it been confirmed that the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley or idler pulley bearings are definitely ok ? Just to rule out a possible easy fix. Thumbs Up
