Engine Management Light / Few Warnings

Hi all,
Are you well? Hope so.

Yesterday after no apparent reason the EML came on. All seems fine and no warnings until I got home. When I went to put the car into reverse, I got two messages:

HDC Not Available
Gearbox Fault

After the gearbox clunking signficantly when I put it into reverse, it then seemed fine. Started fine this morning but EML still on, but no grumpiness from the gearbox.

Googling would tell me that most HDC errors are due to battery problems, but I have recently put a new battery in. I swapped a Bosch S5013 830CCA for an Exide 900CCA.

I know that sometimes the warnings that appear may be a bit misleading (I got Gearbox Fault on my D3 when the fuel pump failed on me on the M62!) so the HDC and Gearbox fault may not be linked.

Before I go part with some hard-earned cash, any thoughts on a) errors and could they be linked to something common between them, b) any advice on batteries, ampage etc.

Any help or advice most appreciated.

Many better than I will be along at some point but I would say you cannot rely on what the 'dash' messages are; get the fault codes read.

Perhaps put out a call to see if a forum member has a reader in your area and is willing to help.

Good luck Thumbs Up

You need diagnostic codes read. If you're able to do work on the car yourself a GAP IID bt or similar tool is invaluable and will save you lots of cash / grief even in the short term.

The EML being illuminated refers to an engine management issue affecting the exhaust emissions from the car. So its likely to be either a faulty sensor or perhaps an egr issue. As all the vehicle ECU's need to communicate the g/box may just be a side effect of the main engine mngmt problem.

Hi,

Thanks for this and could make sense. I have recently had one of the MAF sensors replaced too and would suspect that they and the EGRs are all interlinked. Maybe it is a knock-on effect.....

As someone else mentioned, an error tool would be a good idea as I do have a local LR specialist but they charge £50 per shot. (But then they are there to make money too....)

I'll get it read and raid my piggy-bank.

Thanks for the insight people.
