I’ve bought a pump now and plan an end of year oil and filter changes now because of this.
Good to hear it was a one off occurence, I'll be checking much more often once I have changed the current oil.
I am a bit concerned I may be dumping £70 worth of oil every couple of months.Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

I had to go to the office today (24 miles) and on the way experienced a 'Restricted Performance' moment. Anyway, before I left the office to come home I checked the oil level and the reading is back to 'OK' and the level is showing at max.
I had done a quite a few of very short journeys recently so maybe that was the problem. I'll be checking regularly and see if it re-appears.Cheers

I sucked out 1.2 litres and the gauge now reads one segment below full.
New oil should arrive tomorrow and I’ll drain the engine and refill with the correct amount.
Maybe I’ll leave it one segment from full so I can monitor if it goes up without becoming over full.Just 'cause you got the power... that don't mean you got the right.

Oil pumped out and replaced with fresh Magnatec. Will be keeping a

I got a little OCD with my D4 before I sold it.
I would check the oil prior to every start up each day and always park it flat overnight prior to the check. I just didn't trust that gauge! lol
I don't suggest a check every single start up!........ at least weekly though! The modern diesel engine is a swine for diluting its oil.A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

Fine with dilution.
my D4 3.0l MY2011 drinks oil. 1 ltr every 3500kms. Oil goes into intercooler. No smoke from exhaust
Cannot find why.
Could it be the crankcase ventilation. But which part.

Hi everyone, Recently experienced a similar issue. I had done a full service on my D4 in February at an independent. I check the oil level usually once or twice per week, everything has been spot on. However, in the last few weeks, I've experienced the 'overfilled' message. I removed about 100ml of oil using a hand suction pump and it still says 'overfilled'. I'm not sure what has caused this, but the car drives ok. I performed a forced regen of the dpf last week after my IID Tool said I had 14gms of soot buildup (I've been doing mostly city driving in the last few weeks) - but reading this thread I'm going to pump out all the oil and see how much was in there. Then I will refill with only 5.5 litres (one or two bars below max on the digital display) then monitor the situation.

I forgot to say, mine started a service required countdown around 5m after the previous service. That together withe the overfilled oil level indicator was gave me confidence it was definitely oil dilution ( as it had previously been at the ‘OK’ full level for those 5m). I’m scheduling in a second oil change towards the end of the year now.

Hello everyone. I’m doing my oil change today and will remove the entire lot (suction method until nothing comes out). Two questions am I better off doing this method on a cold engine (after everything has drained to the sump) or on a warm engine where the oil is thinner? Second question is what amount do I put in? This would not be considered a dry fill would it? Service fill is 5.9 litres. Will probably start with 5.5

My indy showed me how they do it . Warm engine, loosen oil filter before sucking out the oil. They have a proper vacuum pump, so get it pretty much all out and put in 6L . It shows bang on full an 'OK: following their procedure.

Ok everyone this is what I experienced after taking my car to have a service done (I'm not going to name the garage - as it is yet to be determined whether it is a technician error or there's something wrong with my car).
But this is the procedure I carried out to fix the situation:
After checking the oil level some days after my service I had an overfill message - After driving the car and leaving it to settle the warning would not appear (it had the top of normal level indicator). The overfill message only appeared once the oil was allowed to completely drain back to the sump (overnight or more than 4 hours).
Checking with the GAP IID Tool (after leaving the car overnight) it said I had 7.4L of oil in the system.
Using the vacuum pump method I removed exactly 6.75L of oil (measured precisely) ensuring the car was left to stand for about two hours before the fluid removal (to ensure most returned to the sump).
Changed filter - re-torqued filter housing - replaced engine cover - added 5.2L of fresh Castrol Magnatec 5W-40 Diesel DPF (see LR_Time for advice on which oil to use).

It seems the GAP IID Tool measures how much is in the entire system (via some clever trickery).
I extracted all that I could with the vacuum pump and measured precisely 5.5L of fresh oil. So there's around 1.3L of oil retained around the engine in the galleries and lubrication channels. The only way to remove this would be to strip the engine completely. That would then result in a 'dry fill'.
