Engine speed related whine - could be air con compressor?

Morning,

The D3 has a new noise - a whining sound that seems related to engine speed, it increases in volume as you accelerate. However it goes when you turn the ventilation fan off (centre knob all the way counterclockwise, no orange lights) - assuming that the HVAC fan itself isn't making the noise - why would it change with engine speed, I'm thinking that it's the air con compressor and that turning the fan control to Off disengages the air con compressor clutch, which stops the noise.

Anyone else had this?

If it is the compressor then I guess it's a new compressor. Found some horror stories about changing it on the TdV6, I'm guessing the V8 is roughly similar...

I dont know about the v8 but the diesel doent have a standard a/c pump clutch, it is in fact a variable displacement unit, quite interesting if you google or youtube it.

When switching the hvac off does it also close the recirc flap? if so that may explain why you think its hvac related and the noise could be coming from the engne itself ie belts/pulleys etc.
