Engine system failure

Hi , only had my D3 since September, and love it. However, it’s started to show an ESF message.it also shows a low coolant level, but there is plenty there, and the prev owner said the bottle was replaced. I’ve taken it to a local LR specialist who said it was egr valves, and quoted £700 to replace both. It still has plenty of grunt, but occasionally if it goes over 3000rpm, it goes into limp mode, then I have to stop and turn off then it’s back to normal. Any suggestions? South Wales based

Blank the egrs Smile will cost you £5 and you’ll be amazed at the crud you find in the engine when you do it.

Wouldn’t be causing your low coolant warning though, that may be a dodgy sensor

Well I had the engine carbon cleaned recently, for the grand price of £39 . Hardly any crud came out, and I still have the esf message, but it does drive a whole lot better. Was much more responsive directly afterwards.

It said egr performance circuit range. I was hoping for a simple easy and cheapest fix. If I do blank the egr off, will I need a re map?

Not on a 2005, just need to physically blank them. Just insert blanking plates where the egr pipes meet the egr, leave the pipes in place. Blanking them is an MOT failure if seen but they can’t / don’t dig to see

I would just recommend doing it as soon as you can. If EGRs are jammed open it does the plastic inlet manifold no good.

Blanking kits are cheap and its an easy job with minimal tools.

Well folks, an update . I decided to order a set of blanking plates and give it a go, only to find when I started work, that the egr had been blanked off, as well as the top ones. Still showing a message and occasionally going into limp mode. So back to basics and fault finding. The only difference I made was a performance air filter, which was washable. Took that out, and replaced the old filter, and hey presto, no message, and all good to go

That’s good news Smile at least it only cost you a blanking kit and a new filter, I probably wouldn’t use that garage going forward though Smile

Well the blanking kit is unused, as it’s been done. Still never mind d, I’m glad it’s running ok
