engine system fault

Greetings. I went to the dealer to get my new LR3 TD V6 SE Friday. I drove the car for 5km to the first gas station for filling it and when I stopped I noticed a smell of burnt rubber and a faint white smoke or vapor from the back of the engine. I called the dealer and he said that maybe the smoke comes from some grease or lubricant that spilled on the engine. I continued my trip but after some 5km, while I was traveling at 80km/h a blip sounded and a message on the dashboard appeared: Engine System Fault. I stopped, looked in the manual and immediately called the dealer. He said that I can continue the trip but without going over 100-120 km/h and visit him Monday. I was very intrigued by the smell and now the recurring message so I returned to the dealer where I arrived around 3PM. Here the car was taken into the service and I waited until 5PM when I was told that they are unable to identify the failure and that the car must remain in the service. I left the dealer in a cab... As the 11th was a Friday and they weren’t working on Saturdays I'll have to wait till Monday. I don't think I ever heard such a story, even with a Lada... I'm very dissapointed and in serious doubt about this car's reliability...

At the moment, you have a customer/dealer problem initially and if I recall your Romanian legal system, whilst a bit slow is similar to the rest of Europe now. You need to start with that side first.

From the error, was it a red or amber light that came on?

There was no light whatsoever - just a blip and the message on the screen. I pulled over and stopped the engine and then restarted and the message was gone. But it reappeared at about 80 km/h. One more thing, I was surprised from the start by the slow reaction of the brakes, I almost bumped into the front car several times, I had to press against the seat to stop the car! And another curious thing, when accelerating with the message on there was a curious noise from the engine, like a loose chain or something, only when accelerating though. And the smell I was speaking of could be sent only when the car stopped, I suppose that while driving the fresh air is taken from above the hood somewhere.

Hi Adara,

Sounds to me like it hasn't been taken out of delivery mode properly (if at all).
The brakes are some of the best around and work incredibly well for a 2.7 ton vehicle, yours definitely aren't right

Maybe Slimer is correct, the car has not been Pre Delivery Inspected correctly. Did the suspension rise and fall?

Also were you given a full and detailed instruction by the dealer as to how the car operated before you left them.

Re the bumping into the car in front, whenever I am in Romania that is how we told people in front that we wanted to overtake anyway, no one ever moves over there Shocked Wink .

In the 15 minutes I was in the car the suspension seemed to work fine. I got an unofficial answer from the dealer, it seems the turbine (!?) or a part of the turbine is the cause but they have to order one at the factory and this takes up to 3 weeks!!!

Good luck!

Did you actually receive a demonstration of how it works from access height through normal to extended height?

No, I did not. But by going through the forum and reading the online manual I knew how to check and made sure that the suspension was at normal height before leaving.

The line (on road indicator) near the switch was lit. Also a on road height selected (or something similar) message was displayed.

Great thats one problem out of the way.
Next is the engine. When things went wrong, did any signs display in the dash or anywhere else?

No, Just the message ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT. In the manual they say "engine management system registers a serious fault - reduced performance may be experienced; avoid high speeds and consult your Land Rover dealer". The message dissapeared when turning off the engine only to reappear at about 80 km/h.
