ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT under full throttle.

Been getting this fault a few times under full throttle, also power is way down (remapped) and mpg is down by between 10% - 20%, getting 25mpg when driving at steady 70mph, would normally be 30mpg ish. When bong sounds "i" appears with ENGINE SYSTEM FAULT, car goes into limp home mode and have to either pull over & restart or do a rolling restart, i clears but power is still down. Mostly happens going up hills, last occurred when giving it extra throttle (to get round something) but in cruise control, dropped down to cruise level & held it. Previously with no cc it lost power & slowed down. Was carrying 350kg of wheels & tyres but no seats (commercial load deck) but was doing it with nothing in the back.

Did think EGRs but these were blanked off few months ago (06 Auto, EuroIII). Had this problem in the summer, thought changing MAF sensor fixed it and had no issues after, esp on Tunisia trip where lots of full throttle driving. Just changed fuel filter which is what I thought it was but this didn't fix the issue, also new air filter. Sad

Any thoughts peeps, getting a bit annoyed with it and need to get it sorted as a matter of urgency but reluctant to throw it at a garage without understanding what may be the cause.

TIA

Derek

PS just had a chin wag with SWMBO and decrease in mpg might be a red herring as when drinking the fuel it has been when battling a wicked head wind. Last trip was 800 miles and got 28.6mpg (actual) with most of that being at 70mph.

I have had a similar issue on two occasions. Both times I was towing a caravan uphill on a dual carriageway when the 'engine system fault' message came on.
After stopping from limp mode I turned off, waited then fired up again and all was OK. I have not blanked my EGR (05MY) but that is on the list of jobs to do. I was hoping it may stop this annoyance.

Otherwise no problems over the first 5k of ownership.

I posted on the other Engine Fault thread before I saw this one Embarassed

Check the intercooler - changing mine (I'm going to soak the old one in a water bath to try and get the mud out from between the fins- 2 months should be enough Rolling with laughter ) the other week has improved fuel consumption by about 5-10% and its not faulted since - though mine only faulted when the ambient was above about 21'C and I'd been on a long motorway run.

As it is hard to see, one way to check for good flow, is to use water - take off the top cowl over the fan, and direct water with a hose through the IC. I used a bit of 15mm copper, with a 90deg bend into a 15-8mm reducer so that I could direct the water straight onto the back of the coil. You should see lots of water flowing through - unlike mine that just filled up the cowl Big Cry

Mine did exactly that - engine went into limp mode at full throttle uphill, slightly scary when joining the M40 uphill with a trailer Shocked

Within three days it had died - turned out to be fuel pump failure Crying or Very sad

DSL, this sounds very similar to the symptoms I had on way back from Aviemore last new year towing the caravan

sudden loss of power. stopped and restarted but still a bit of power loss.

Checked faultcodes with Faultmate and was showing "Turbo Overboost" error. I reset the codes and havnt had the fault since !!. it wasnt the intercooler hose, that was OK when TFC did the health check.

Wish it was, I can diagnose that!! DD, seems quite common for this to occur then no recurrences, mine has happened 4 times this week. Will sort out getting codes deleted.

Del, I know you're getting a bit desperate so thought I'd throw in a long shot....

What about the brake pedal switch? These are known for failing and can cause funny problems....

Probably not the actual fault, but it's a cheap enough thing to try Question

It's a lack of pressure in the turbo caused by a partially blocked up fuel filter.
