Engine Temperature Warning Light Problem

Hi, having an intermittent problem with my engine temperature gauge on my 2005 Disco 3 2.7d auto in that the gauge will suddenly ping up to the top (usually after a bit of driving and the engine is probably warm) and the red warning light come on and the fan kicks in. If you pull over, turn off the engine then turn it back on again (even immediately) the gauge drops back to the bottom and stays there even when you set off again and the fan switches back off? If you open the bonnet there is no smell of overheating at all, and i have no idea what the issue is. It has done it 4 times in the last 4 weeks. Any help would be appreciated???

Ta

Keep getting the same problem, usually have to run the car for an hour or so, stop at services, and when I continue the warning light and cooling fan come on. If I then stop the engine and re-start the car its ok for 20 minutes then same problem, a real pain when driving on the motorway as its not always easy to re-start the engine at 70mph Laughing
I've checked the coolant level and this looks ok.

Be very careful - high temperature can seriously damage the engine.....

Thanks - but I dont think its an overheat problem, the gauge goes from the bottom to top instantly, then immediatly switch off engine and back on all is normall - for a while.
Looks to me to be more of a sensor problem as collant levels are fine.

It's the only circumstances where I've seen it so it may be a coincidence and hasn't reocurred since.

Is it the temperature sensor wire going to ground ?

In cars of old the temperature guage came of a regulated supply, through the meter then the sensor (thermistor) to ground.

If it still is like this I would look for a wire thats lost its insulation somewhere Smile

Ian.

Temp sensor now fixed!

Found out the problem with mine was with a broken sensor (was split in 2!), engine temp was perfect but the sensor was knackered. Whilst the car was in with Pete at Bell Autos to get the EGR blanking kit fitted i mentioned the temp gauge issue and he said he would have a look for me. He found the broken sensor and replaced it whilst doing the valve blanking at no extra charge. Not had a problem with it since and the car is like a different beast with the faulty EGR valves blanked off. Big thanks to Pete, brilliant service and knowledge. Well worth the day off and the 3hr round trip to see him. Thumbs Up Mr. Green Thumbs Up

Went to the dealers and had it checked as it ws getting worse, temp going into red and fans kicking in every 15-20 minutes.
Nothing showed up on test book - so I suggested they replace the sensor, which was ordered and fitted the next morning - excellent service as I was going away for the weekend and needed the car.
Everything working ok - apart from my sat nav now saying it isnt installed!.
