so in the past few days mine has developed a sort of engine whine which changes pitch with engine revs, even when stationary, so not linked to drive train. Sounds like it could be coming from the front of the lump, mileage is a whole 33k miles anyone else have this, should I be worried ? and theeeeennn......???

Aircon compressor pulley
They'll change the compressor under warranty I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Also got a whine. Developed post Salisbury, even though I had steam cleaned the engine bay. Air compressor was changed last August under Warranty, but no longer have this cover. What would you suggest?

If it rises and falls with revs when stationary, it's likely to be the A/c pulley or the PS pump, although A/c more common. If it rises and falls with road speed it's more likely to be a diff or transfer box. I seem to remember that parts replaced under warranty come with a 12 month warranty of their own? Stand to be corrected on that
If so, and it is the A/c compressor again then you may well get it replaced under warranty (parts warranty, not original sale warranty) but as above, not 100% on this.
Anyone? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Could also be ancillary drive belt tensioner (bearing on the way out), or alternator / power steering pump I suppose. Or just the belt making a noise, (you may be able to check that one out by carefully ejecting talcum powder (well known practise though) on the belt while it is running to see if it stops whining.

On a similar vein, mine has started to run the viscous fan more often than usual. Talking to Slimer on Thursday he said his was doing similar, but i aint too sure.
Running on cruise control, (having to brake cuz some numpty BMW driver in front cant maintain that vital 6 inch gap from the car in fronts bumper), and i hear the viscous fan is howling like a banshee, even above the din of the kids and radio...at 70mph. Is this normal or is she running too hot (temp gauge is in the middle) .
Also think from my 240 mile run on a tank, she might be a bit poorly any thoughts?

Had exactly as described 2 weeks ago. Air conditioning compressor was replaced under warranty. Had done 24,000km so first service was done as well. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Sure about the v. fan ? Could be stone in brake causing howling / bad mpg. Get brakes checked - might be dangerous. If brakes OK, N E smoke ? Power OK ? There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song
