I don't want to return it. I bought it knowing that the timing belt was probably broken, and that it may need a new engine.

I only paid €3200 for the car, and if the worst comes to the worst, I have a friend that can refurbish the whole engine for approx. €2500.

He has just done the gearbox on my L322 and L320. For the L322 he asked €2100 (which is MUCH less than the €5000 that they were asking here) and he has even put in the SONNAX valves, and for the L320 he has replaced the Torque Converter for €1000 including parts and labour.

He is retired, and does this to augment his pension and because he is bored.

He in in the process of repairing the engine from a P38 (the V8 engine) because it needs the cylinders rectifying. He has all the machines, and is positive he can do the tdv6.

Even if I pay €2500 for the engine, plus the €3200 for the car, that still only makes €5700 which is not much for a D3 in this good condition.

I should point out that D3s have retained their value much better this side of the channel. I had a look, and a good HSE with the same mileage as this one, has a value of €8000-€15000 !!!!!

I don't mind paying to get it sorted!! I just want to make sure that it is done properly.

Also, I bought it from some friends, not from LR, but it was in this condition when I bought it. It had already failed.

I am contacting LR "on their behalf" since the car is still under their name, and if LR will sort it "for them" that is fine. I will then change the ownership after LR have done the work.

If LR won't do anything, then I will change the ownership earlier, and then simply get the engine repaired.

Yeah I’m east of the channel, too, and certainly know what D3s go for up here north. Since we have draconian car taxes in use no D3 goes for less than 15000 eur. What you’re getting then is an S with ~300000 km on it in absolutely terrible shape. Big Cry

I knew I should have dragged my old D3 from Sortland back to Finland. Big Cry Big Cry OK engine was knackered and steering wheel was on the wrong/right side but if they are getting that much it would have kept me in 🍷for a week or several. Thumbs Up

RHD would “probably” lower the resale value even here Wink

Plus I wouldn't have had the ceremonial stripping of the old girl down, adding to my therapy bill. Whistle I've put a few more things in place today for RT18 and more than once I've thought "if she gets there!". Laughing Laughing

I’m sure there is a nice RHD V8 waiting for you on some UK car site. There was a Qatari import D4 5.0 (ok that one was LHD) which looked delicious somewhere in UK Thumbs Up

Sticking with the D4 I've got, bought from my parents so I know never abused. Plus if I go that route they presently have a MY16 Landmark that will be nice low miles and would have been garaged most of its life.

Present D4 on the right, poss future on the left. I can even live with the colour, it'll show up the grime nicely. Whistle

Plus I'm not sure I could afford a 10,000km road trip in a V8. Whistle

Roughly:

95E10: 0,15 l/km x 1,5 e/L x 10000 km = 2250 e
Diesel: 0,116 l/km x 1.25 e/L x 10000 km = 1470 e

I averaged the cost of fuel and the l/km is on both models estimated higher than what it would be if you drive long distances at constant speed.

Not that much of a difference in the end considering total cost of ownership IMHO Thumbs Up

(The V70 would be roughly 800 e)

I know but it would push things into the "ouch" zone. Besides that slice of the budget is reserved for Scandic hotel nights as I'm getting a bit old for almost 3 weeks of camping/campervanning. Whistle

I agree on the Scandics. Reasonably priced and all you can eat breakfasts. Well worth the money.

If its a non-runner because of a broken oil pump and snapped timing belt then you are not looking at an easy or cheap repair. Its basically a new engine.

If you are contacting LR Lux then you will get absolutely no help or interest. Expect a 10k+ quote. And then some more...

LR Habay will take on this type of repair and IIRC its about 7,500 euro for an LR exchange engine.

If you do a bit of a search you will probably find some cheaper options from Germany - I'm not convinced about the validity and assurance these are good rebuilds, using correct parts etc. There's a reason why most of the time its a replacement engine and not a rebuild so I question how they achieve a fitted engine for abut 4,500 euro...

(And I might be interested in your friend's contact details for future reference Laughing Thumbs Up )

Hello Stiff,

Do I take it that you are in Luxembourg?

I know that LR Luxembourg are worse than useless!!

I have been dealing with them since my first D2 and I have completely given up.

At the moment I have written to LR Customer Services in Belgium. I will see what they say.

Otherwise I have two alternatives... In Leverkusen there is a place that will fit a replacement engine for €5500 all inclusive. This would have a 1 year warranty.
The second alternative is this friend of mine. He used to run his own BMW garage, and has worked in all sort of engines (even aircraft engines). He has now retired and does work privately for friends and acquaintances. I spoke to him about this car, and when I said I could get the engine replaced for €5000 he said that he never got more than half that price for replacing an engine.

So, at the moment I am simply waiting to see what LR say. If they offer a reasonable discount, I will take it even if the price is slightly higher because then it would be a brand new engine.

Otherwise I haven't decided if I will get it done in Leverkusen of by this friend of mine. He would do a good job, but will take ages to get it done (he took 3 weeks to get the Torque converter done on my RRS).

Let's see what LR say before taking any decisions!!

Yep - In Luxembourg Thumbs Up

€5.5k for engine including VAT and fitting is either too good to be true...or everyone should start shipping their dead D3's to Germany. It's about €2.5k to €3k in work time alone if I'm not mistaken.

An exchange engine from LR is about 3.5k GBP before VAT. With 2 year, unlimited miles/km's warranty - not 1 year the German company offers.

The math doesn't add up Confused But I might just be being overly cautious Thumbs Up
