Are you sure it was in Dumbarton? Engine Engineering in Paisley recondition engines but in 2016 they were visited by the police - I think someone complained that his BMW came back from them with a different engine and when the police raided the houses of the owners they found, along with many other things, a cache of firearms! As someone else on here said, if it is them take care!!

Defo Dumbarton and doesn't look like the same people as involved with Engine Engineering in Paisley.

Have a look here:-

and read the reviews.

Google says "Permanently closed"

Reviewers say:-

Avoid this company at all costs. I sent an Audi TT engine for a complete rebuild. I was quoted £900.00 which would cover the transport costs and all repair works needed and turn around would be no more than two weeks.
Lots of phone calls and legal letters sent to the Engine Workshop, four months later, my engine is returned, still broken with a sheared bolt in the engine block. Engine is totally ruined and wouldn’t even turn over. Now have trading standards, and solicitors involved to recover the costs through court. My car is only fit for the scrap now.
This company is fraudulent, promising everything and delivering nothing. Please avoid them, total scam artists.

Dreadful company. Took five months to do a three week job which I paid for up front. They offered compensation of £50 per day for late delivery but are now refusing to pay. Within a week of collection the car needed warranty work doing. They authorised the work to be done by another garage but as yet they have not settled the bill. They will promise you the world but will fail to deliver and then stop communicating. Legal action is now pending. Please don't use this garage.

Do not use this company!
6 months to get car back and wasn’t fixed!
£1950 to fix engine and put back together only to have the car sent back a few times and last time from October to end of January. Picked car up from paisley (engine workshop in Dumbarton) the oil pressure still wasn’t fixed. Taken it to a specialist garage (now have a bill to pay them) and they cannot get to bottom of the oil pressure. After changing everything that could have been i have been advised it could be the way the engine has been put back together. Refunded £1000 (originally told full refund not half reason they paid for a hire car for short period of time). Don’t offer something as a way to help if you can’t fulfil The original job been paid for. Regret going to Engine Workshop Ltd in the beginning. Now I have legal action. I could be thousands to get to the bottom of what they have done! Shocked, disgusted and infuriated by not only their mistakes but continuous lies and company issues.

I should think your friend should instruct solicitors without delay.

I feel for him.

I’ve been keeping an eye on it for a while, and seems to have gone quiet...

If the company has "disappeared" with his car your friend should seriously think of taking legal advice, without delay.

He will probably be advised to start proceedings immediately, and alert the police and DVLA that the car has been stolen.

Many years ago I lost a Morgan V8 under similar circumstances. The insurance refused to pay out, as they car & its keys were with the garage with my consent, and thus when they sold the car it was "conversion by a bailee" not theft, and my remedy was to sue the garage, which was insolvent.

How does that work Nigel? Surely they never had title to the car so how could the purchaser obtain good title (I think that's the phrase) so surely you could take it back from the person who purchased the car and leave them to sue the company?

Paul

Frankly it was c. 30 years ago & horrendously complex.

The police weren't interested, the insurance company refused to pay out, and I was unable to trace the car, and thus reclaim it or sue whoever had it.

To make things more difficult I was in the States at the time, comunications were more difficult than now, and I was "hard-up" !
