EPB (Again) New Mod Considered

Hi There

I know this issue has been dealt with quite a bit. I have a different question this time.

I was greeted by a screaming EPB last week Wednesday. It was so bad the neigbours came round to hear what was going on. I had to release the EPB using the manual cable under the gear lever.

I know my EPB was not well, and therefore I do not use it at all.

Has anyone considered installing a normal hand brake that works off the normal rear brake pads, like in a normal car?

I am seriously considering that. I am having regular issues with it. Therefore by passing the EPB in total.

Hello!

I have just posted my adventures with failed EPB in another post and mentioned the idea of a manual handbrake conversion....I am sure there would be plenty of customers.

I am a classic mini fan and KAD have developed a variety of stuff for minis -including a rear disc brake conversion. A company like this would be able to turn around a manual conversion pretty easily and remove one of the worst aspects of a disco3..

Please one of you companies save us from this misery! A failed actuator is £600 plus so if you aimed at £700-£800 for a kit...people would have it.. Bow down

Where you put the handle is more of a problem.

It could squeeze where the EPB lever and blank plate are -it would have to be short, but could fit....

Yes I think a short lever should work where the current EPB switch is and the blank plate. There is already a housing for the cable, one just needs to tie up all of the loose ends that is currently in the actuator and then replace the current release cable with a push/pull cable.

Some time ago I enquired with X-Eng, the company that make the disc handbrake conversion for Defenders to see if they could do anything for the D3. At that time they were looking at a similar thing for the D3, ie a disc handbrake that acted on the prop but was powered by the EPB motors. It never got followed up though as I changed the car but it might be worth getting back in touch with them?

It is one of the reasons I would not buy a D3 for off-road use, particularly a manual box version where you rely on the EPB a lot.

mine is a manual,, gets used off road pretty much every day with work,, i've actually found it to be less of a problem getting used rather than not used.. Thumbs Up

that being said,, i'd still rather have a normal HB
 one wife.......livid

I suppose there is a variety of situations you can call 'off road', the problems with mine were directly related to ingress of water and mud/silt from very wet off road conditions where the rear wheels were often partly submerged, it happened in all the D3's I owned although for some reason some seemed more prone to the issue than others.

I still think its a crap design and would much prefer a manual brake, just don't see the point of electronic versions, unnecessary complication I reckon.

re offroad,, didnt mean pay and play,, mines used daily in wood/ mud usually pulling trees over/ out

Yes I agree it is a rubbish design. I cannot believe the LR would design something like that knowing the vehicles will be driven through mud and water and dust etc.

the design is the same as the brakes on my 58 MGA so lr didnt design it Rolling with laughter

I know it does not help LR3/4 but they have ditched it for the new models.
