Some where and blowed if I can find it is a posting about erratic tickovers. So I decided to put up another. Some of you guys with manual gearboxes claim to have a problem with tickover. This may not be so. Obviously without driving your D3's I cannot tell, but let me explain the system on the D3. Auto's need different info, which I could pass on later.
The car is designed for both on road and offroad, so it has to have an ECU that works in a different way to the standard on road car. Rather than go into copious explanation, take the car out and try this. If you can find wet level grass even better. Pelyma, your front lawn may be big enough?
Place the car into low range and engage 1st gear (low) and keep your foot off the gas. Let the clutch fully out (and put your left foot on the floor). The car will go forward and not stall. As the car gains momentum put gentle pressure on the brake pedal keeping your foot off the clutch completely (trust me). Apply slowly more and more pressure on the brake pedal. Certainly more pressure than you expect.
You will find the car will keep going, but increase its revs automatically to cope with the problem. To stall the car will almost require you to stand on the brake pedal.
The principle is that if the car senses pressure its TC comes into action, which is linked to its ECU. Let the car take the strain basically.
Try it in 2nd low also, pretty powerful car you will find. When in traffic if you ride the clutch, the ECU is sensing all sorts of erratic instructions, so it reves up and causes erratic tickover. Bingo.

You really need to give us some lessons one weekend (not Billing as we need peace and quiet)

Simon, you ain't going to get peace and quiet at Billing. The huge V8's will be snarling the serious off road course. Music from the fair and loudspeakers announcing the events in the arena etc.
However, if we can locate some land with hills etc, I would be pleased to offer some training for the guys. It's one of my businesses so I make it my job to find out and do it.
I have access to some off road centres, one is in Milton Keynes, but they are a bit serious for 'ab initios'. Locate the land and lets do it. Could be fun.

I'd risk coming to MK for that! Probably bring the gun incase its like Leeds

Thats a shame, however I have a slope to my house, that requires low range daily use. Even the other half is great at low range reverse rather than cart the shopping up the stairs.

Meant we need peace and quiet as Billing will not be quiet
Is there no area at MK that we can learn some skills on that won't risk our cars ?

There is a very good centre in MK. I need to speak with them. It has a none damaging course (apart from dust) and a hotel on site. Let me see what can be arranged and the costs. Any of you guys into first aid as it would need a fully qualified first aider if we do this. I am, but cannot count if I am actively involved.

Has anyone tried the little excercise at the top of this pot yet. Would like your comments. Try it to the letter though, no sliiping or riding the clutch, it will not work.

I'm a qualified first aider - if 'first aid in the workplace' counts... As I was in Afghanistan when I re - qualified it should... 
Just need to find me 'ticket'...
