Error code : "Turbo/SuperCharger Overboost" Error
Whilst towing the caravan back from aviemore on Saturday I encountered a small problem :
I was towing the caravan up a reasonably steep incline on the motorway just north of Glasgow. Outisde temp -6c Speed 65mph, revs approx 3000rpm, auto (4th gear), and full throttle. D3 was maintaining a constant speed when power suddenly dropped and the "No Terrain Response" message appeared. gear changing was still possible but very little power.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder, shutdown and restarted, and resumed journey. There was still a lack of power but i managed tio get to the services.
Out came the trusty faultmate and after reading the fault codes (which there were about 30 !!) one stood out :
"Turbo/Supercharger Overboost" Error
I reset the error codes and restarted journey - power was back to normal and depsite trying to replicate the conditions the D3 was fine and carried on the 300+ mile journey with no issues.
so my question ???
What could cause the Overboost error ?
is it a sign of the turbo about to fail ?
does anyone have a spare turbo they dont want Duncan

Possibly intercooler to inlet manifold hose delaminating, dependent upon your software level could also be a temperature / boost pressure calibration issue

sounds like the (rare sporadic) problem I had on my first D3 - dealers had three goes at fixing it: 1. Software Updates 2. New Airflow Sensor (of some kind) 3. New Turbo - the last one fixed it (sorry)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Sounds like a turbo fault. TBH, i would wait until it does it more regularly before worrying about it.My D3 Build Thread

Its only done it once, but I would like to get to the bottom of whats wrong. The problem with waiting until it does it more often is that its likely to fail when I go on holiday to Spain in May and will leave me stranded with a long wait and a huge bill.
I would rather pay out a bit early not be inconvenienced
TFC is coming over on 19th to do some work so he will take a look. If its the Turbo then I will have to get it into the dealers and see if they will do it under Ext Warranty..Duncan

Do we think there is any chance LR will ever admit that the Turbo is a recognised fault and do the decent thing and recall them all?? Of course not.
I am willing to bet that more TDV6 Turbos have failed than TD5's have, or indeed ever will. I can find no indication that Jaguar have any problem with it, nor Citreon Peugeot.
Rant over.

Dont forget that the Jag 2.7 is a twin turbo set up not a single turbo.
In the nicest possibile way , ive got 2 new (shop soiled) TDV6 turbos left for sale at a decent price if needed.

Hi,
While no expert on the D3 Turbo charger set up I do know a thing or two about larger ones, the clue could be in the -6 air temp and the heavy loading on the engine.
"Normal" UK air temp is what 0 to 25deg C and I guess this is what is the standard specification for the control system. But at -6 inlet air temperature for the same turbo charger revs you will be getting a lot more air flow into the engine than normal. Which I would think is the reason for the fault code, and I would not be too concerned unless it comes back. The reverse problem at altitude and on hot days, more effort required to get air into the engine, so less performance.
(Definition of an expert: well an X, is a has been, and a spert, a drip under pressure)

but the D3 is a world wide vehicle capable of towing 3500kgs
I would have thought problems incurred at -6 towing a caravan would be a serious design flaw
although an "overboast" did seem a bit odd..
thanks for the info Duncan

Hi Dunc,
When the design specs were decided, I wonder if they considered someone towing a caravan up a hill with a -6 Air temp. , but point taken, the air temperature and over boost alarm together seemed to me to be related.
Not sure on the spec settings but I do remember reading the settings for Defenders are different depending on which export market they are beeing delivered to.
